[#3618] Fournier's Haydn Hi erictang, There are 2 versions of Brahm's cello sonata by Fournier. The lp I owned is DG tulip with Rudolf Firkusny as pianist, the other is Decca with Backhaus collaboration. The performance in DG version is flawless and recording is excellent. The pianist in the Andre Navarra's Brahm is Alfred Holecek. The lp label is Supraphon SUA10375. Navarra's playing is on par with Fournier.

[#3619] Fournier's Haydn Apart from the DG double CD I mentioned earlier, Pierre Fournier's Haydn cello concertos also appear in Testament (SBT 1359), with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra conducted by Karl Münchinger. In addition, EMI's "Les introuvables de Pierre Fournier" also features two Haydn cello concertos played by this cellist. This 4-CD set was released in 2001, but I have never seen it.

[#3621] Berglund's Sibelius 2nd Symphony I am taking an extended tea break and at the moment listening to this CD: Sibelius: Symphony No. 2 / Selections from "Karelia" Suite Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra / Paavo Berglund [Abbey Road Studios, 1976] Toshiba EMI (Seraphim) TOCE-7145: ADD[?] 1991 This is a deeply touching reading of this glorious piece of music. Berglund has never repeated this success, indeed I think he took a turn for the worse every time he re-did the Symphony No. 2. Ten years later in 1986 he made a slightly better sounding digital version with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra (EMI CDC 7 49511 2), released in 1988. It was deleted within about two years' time. We have to wait until 1995 to see its reappearance in the EMI category in the "forte" series (5 68643 2), the same year when Berglund recorded it, yet again, with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, released by Finlandia. While the Bournemouth remains supreme, the Helsinki is recommendable; but by all means stay away from the COE.

[#3622] Berglund's Sibelius 2nd Symphony Hello trollope, I would like to listen more on symphony; and I will put your recommended Sibelius No.2 on the list. Recently, a friend suggests No.5 & 7 of Karajan to me.

[#3623] Berglund's complete Sibelius symphonies Hi erictang, "On all accounts this is impressive. The playing of the Helsinki orchestra is very fine indeed and the recording rich and well-detailed." (Gramophone) Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 1-4 Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra / Paavo Berglund [1984-1987] EMI (forte) 5 68643 2: DDD 1995 (2 CDs) Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 5-7 / The Oceanides / Finlandia / Tapiola Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra / Paavo Berglund [1984-1987] EMI (forte) 5 68646 2: DDD 1996 (2 CDs) I hope these two sets of mid-priced EMI discs are still available for you in the market. In the case of the earlier Bournemouth version, I doubt it.

[#3624] Berglund's complete Sibelius symphonies Hi Trollope, Thank you for the information. Below is an interesting website about Sibelius Symphony. http://inkpot.com/classical/sibsym5.html From the website: The "Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra / Paavo Berglund " - EMI has licensed the recording to Royal Classics, a budget line - hence super-cheap price, great recordings but no notes whatsoever ![]()

[#3626] Membran CDs Hi guys, Nice sharing of Sibelius Symphonies. As mentioned in some past posting, I also have the Berglund/Helsinski Phil EMI box-set that included Sibelius Symphonies and tone poems. A very good set indeed. Besides, I learned that Barbirolli's recordings of Sibelius Symphonies are very good. Anyone got it? ![]()

[#3627] Membran CDs Sorry to confuse you with the title "Membran CDs" in the previous posting. Actually, I received Shun Cheong's eNews some days ago, and you guys may be interested in the Membran box-sets. Though they may be very old recordings or you may have some of the pieces already, but it's still worthwhile to have a look: http://www.shuncheongrec.com/newreleases/nl/0327/membrancd/index.htm

[#3628] Beethoven Piano Sonata Hello Trollope, Just recall your posting on 4Jan2005 20:56 about your 23 different version of "Hammerklavier". I'm listening to Gilels' playing again. From Gramophone: "Gilels manages to give it more tonal beauty and warmth than most pianists, without any loss of strength or momentum."

[#3629] Beethoven Piano Sonata Hi Eric and All, You will perhaps also remember that a couple of weeks ago I reported to you all on my listening experience of three editions of Gilels's "Hammerklavier". (05-04-22 21:21). My major concern of that report was the difference, if any, in sound quality. I did not say anything about my response to Gilels's music-making. I would say the greatest achievement of this little giant is the ability to produce an authoritative voice, most notable in his (incomplete) Beethoven cycle. His "Hammerklavier" is at once strong, yet natural, which is a rare achievement, and which must be the result of deep thinking. I also like his early Beethoven sonatas very much. There is an innocence in them which disarms you. I hope your "Hammerklavier" is NOT one of those "made in W.-Germany" editions. These CDs have a certain cult following, but I refuse to be persuaded that they are, in toto, superior in recorded sound. ZZZ...zzz..zz..z....

[#3630] Beethoven Piano Sonata Hi Trollope and All, My Gilels Beethoven Sonata is DG's "Original-image bit -processing" series: 453 221-2 special-price at about $360 from HMV earlier this year. The Hammerklavier sounds OK to me.

[#3631] Beethoven Piano Sonata Just listen to Hammerklavier by kempff and pollini on LP. The pollini one has a better sonic effect but the piano sounds a bit 'big'. His playing is powerful with high dynamic contrast. Nevertheless, I perfer the playing and timbre of Gilels and Kempff.

[#3632] Beethoven Piano Sonata I don't have Pollini on LP. I find his DG Beethoven sonatas CDs recorded in the 1970s are all too dry for comfort.

[#3633] Tchaikovsky 165 years ago Just now I spent four and a half minutes listening to Tchaikovsky's "May" in his "The Seasons". Sviatoslav Richter / April 1983, Munich / JVC VICC-60005 / DDD 20-bit K2 / 1997 Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born 165 years ago, today.
