The finale of Brhams's Fourth Symphony, allegro energico e passionate, is "perhaps the most extraordinary symphonic movement written in the post-Beethoven and pre-Mahler era". (Walter Frisch, "Brahms: The Four Symphonies" [New York: Schirmer Books, 1996], p.130) Cast in the form of thirty Baroque variations plus a coda, it is a huge challenge for Brahms to write. And for the conductors and orchestral players, their challenge is to bring it into coordination, in the process of recreating the tension that leads to the tension in the next variation. In this movement alone, I think Toscanini, either with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (EMI) or with the Philharmonia Orchestra (Testament), reigns supreme. I don't have his NBC Symphony Orchestra version. |

The Celibidache cycle on DG is not as exciting as that on EMI, well... |

| [#3599] Haskil 's Chopin Inspired by the discussion recently, I listened to Haskil's version of Chopin piano concerto, the recording sound fresh to me and engineer at that time are acceptable considered it age. Haskil can always make the piano sing, her legato was the best I have ever heard of, and that is a important factor that make her Mozart so lyrical. I always think that a invisble link exist between Mozart's piano music and Chopin's music, Haskil is another notable example, her playing was fluent nature rather that sentimental, she `let the music speak for itself', if Mozart was born in romantic era, he would write a piano concerto like Chopin. |

| [#3602] Brahms's 4th Symphony Hi wal: I also owned around 15 sets of Brahms Symphonies, but Kempe with RPO really make my blood red hot, while Wand latest NDR live give me a feeling of cold and chilling. Furtwrangler EMI cycle is the best overall, Toscanini I owned RCA cycle with NBC, I heard the BBC cycle is great, but Testament is a bit expensive, will get it at right time right price in future. |

The recorded sound could benefit from sharper definition. | [#3607] Brahms's 4th Symphony Trollope: I dunno why that NDR Live in 1996 (less often circulate like 80's studio recording) giving such feeling, sound like a long farewell in 4th mvt., so I will take this out for some special occasion. While his older cycle give straight, faith and fresh reading, and blood boiling fire in No.1 Live with Chicago Symphony Orchestra (also RCA recording). Some cycle I only give a brief listening that didn't impressed me, especially Charles Mackerras with SCO in Telarc, with size of orchestra close to the time of Brahms performing them. But the outcome is quite uncomfortable to me, the dramatic characteristic of Brahms Symphonies like disappeared under this arrangement. |

It gives perfectly a sense of urgency reinforced by the consistent flow and speed of his condicting. He is as good as Toscanini in the line of interpretation I roughly gathered in the earlier message. Well, that’s all the non-musical comment I can give. As to Il Trovatore by the way, I would recommend the 2CD set with Bergonzi on DG and the one with Domingo and Giulini on DG The Originals. |
