[#3639] Kyung Wha Chung Hi Trazom, My Chung's Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 is a 1972 Decca LP, it should be the same recording as the 24bit Legends CD you'd mentioned, I think the 24/96 remastered CD offers an improved sonic effect. In my opinion, apart from Decca, her recording with Klaus Tennstedt on EMI & Zukerman/Metha (1978 Sony) are also good choices. About Zukerman, I find the orchestra passage at ~5min 30sec is faster than required. For this piece, I particular like the opening (arpeggio, double stopping and multiple stopping played by the violin). I would like to look for the Oistrakh version recorded in the 1960's. ![]()

[#3646] Anhk Hi Eric and DL, My close contact in US ordered the Richter discs from Ankh direct and upon receipt sent them to me via air-mail. I should think it's equally all right to get in touch with this Canadian label from HK direct (http://www3.sympatico.ca/ankhproductions/bobbeaudin/). Bob Beaudin is President of Ankh Productions. My impression is that the discs cost about US$19.99 each now, but they were sold until June 2003 at US$16.99 to members of the Sviatoslav Richter e-mail group. In case you may want to know, Ankh is the name of the Egyptian cross Richter liked to wear at his neck. This tau cross is a symbol of eternal life. It's a small world (Hi Tanuski), for it happened that this same close contact of mine also spent a few days in New York Hilton in late April (http://www.he2005.com) and the photo was taken in the room of one of the exhibitors -- the California-based Gini Systems (http://www.gini.com). I have seen, and have listened to, most of the stuff in the photo in Hong Kong. No, I don't own any of them, nor the space in the photo to listen to music. I posted the photo last night in jest, and also in an effort to send myself to dreamland.

[#3648] Unfamiliar Chung Among the many Chung discs, this is surely not the most talked-about one, but I cherish it very much: Richard Strauss: Violin Sonata in E flat major, op. 18 Respighi: Violin Sonata in B minor Kyung Wha Chung (violin) / Krystian Zimerman (piano) [July 1988] DG 427 617-2: DDD 1989 Re-issued at mid-price 457 907-2

[#3650] Gilbert & Sullivan Are there any Gilbert & Sullivan fans here? I started listening to the G & S operettas fifteen years ago, building up my CD collection with the Decca (London) D'Oyly Carte recordings one by one, with occasional purchases of EMI, Arabesque, and Telarc. Two years ago I took advantage of the EMI box-set sales and bought, despite some duplications, the Pro Arte Orchestra set with Sir Malcolm Sargent conducting: 16 CDs costing only HK$200. The Savoy operas are a British institution. Sullivan's music is not profound stuff, but it is quite splendid really, full of sparkle and charm. The lyrics by Gilbert are pure fun and offer literary attraction in copious supply. I have, in my effort to improve my English, benefited much from reading Ian Bradley's "The Annotated Gilbert and Sullivan" -- cover to cover. My only experience of a live G & S in a theatre is the "Iolanthe". If you are new to this Victorian treasure trove, start with "The Mikado" or "Iolanthe" or "Patience". For a quick, rewarding, and above all bizarrely entertaining introduction to Sir William Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan and their works, by all means rent or buy the DVD movie entitled "Topsy-Turvy" -- winner of two Academy Awards and chosen by 23 film critics as one of the top 10 movies of 1999. Sir Arthur was born 163 years ago, today.

[#3656] Tartini Devil's Trill Extracted from: http://www.answers.com/topic/giuseppe-tartini?hl=double&hl=stop According to legend, Tartini was inspired to write the sonata by a dream in which the Devil appeared at the foot of his bed playing the violin. Any suggestion on this piece?
