[#3610] Brahms's 4th Symphony wal, Brahms symphony was my beloved, however for symphony No 4, I have got two version only, I found Kleiber's version extremely dramatic and exciting. Harnoncourt played with a chamber size Berliner philharmonic, but his playing was energetic and vivid. I am looking for a more reflective, warm, humane version of Brahms symphony No 4, unfortunately Walter's version was out of print.

[#3612] Brahms's Symphony In contrast, I have six versions of Brahms symphony no. 1 ( Furtwangler, Walter, Klemperer, Karajan(1960), Jochum(EMI), Harnoncourt) and 4 versions for No 2&3 (Carlos Kleiber on DVD for symphony No 2, Karajan (1960), Jochum, Walter, Harnoncourt) I must express my admiration on Jochum's playing of Brahms symphony, his playing is spontaneous, improvistional in the style of Furtwangler. Recording was in fine analogue sound from 1970, together with his excellent performance in Brahms piano concerto with Gilels, I consider Jochum as the best Brahms conductor overall. ![]()

[#3613] Brahms's Symphony 同時Jochum又係Bruckner的最佳演繹者之一,這個指揮好厲害,唔講得笑。

[#3614] Brahms's 4th Symphony Brahms sym. no 4 is the most difficult piece to conduct and play well. A line I heard over the radio some years ago may be of interest. It was during an interview with Anthony Campden, the late renowned oboeist and headmaster of the HK school of performing arts who died few years ago from motor neuron disease. "One day I came across Carlos Kleiber incidentally in a lift, the mastro suddenly turned to me and ask'I've been thinking about the Brahms 4 for nearly a month and still have no clue as how to conduct,do you have any idea?' I was so flattrered as the conductor of conductors asked me for opinion. And when the recording finally came out it was the best Brahms 4 that I've heard"

[#3615] Brahms's 4th Symphony ckm, It's not that bad Walter's version is out of print. Some listeners find the last mvt a bit 拖泥 and lacking consistent energy towards the end (though his playing of Nos 1-3 are superb). I think you may like to try Toscanini for older recordings and Barbirolli or Giulini (DG) for stereo (both a bit slow). Or take hercules's Kempe and Wand which should also be satisfactory. +++> But KLEMPERER is a m-u-s-t, haha! Would like to get the budget Jochum set on EMI soon!

[#3616] Brahms's 4th Symphony trollope, In which EMI series is Toscanini-BBC SO contained? In the classic red CD case? Curious to know as I only have vague impression of its being long ago. Thanks!

[#3619] Brahms's 4th Symphony Good evening Wal (and All), I enclose a photo of Toscanini's account with the BBC Symphony Orchestra that interests you much. It's a 1989 release (mastered by Nimbus, made in the UK). Brahms: Tragic Overture, op. 81 / Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98* BBC Symphony Orchestra / Arturo Toscanini *Recorded at public concerts in Queen's Hall, London, 3 & 5 June 1935 EMI (Great Recordings of the Century) CDH 7 69783 2: ADD (mono) 1989 From the same orchestra more than forty years later, there came another version with Rudolf Kempe conducting. Perhaps it would be nicer to have Kempe's earlier account with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Testament), the orchestra to which he was the chosen successor of Sir Thomas Beecham. But the native passion and tonal beauty of this 1976 live performance make this CD eminently recommendable too. Besides, the BBC engineers have done a brilliant job in the transfer. Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98* Schubert: Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, D.485 BBC Symphony Orchestra / Rudolf Kempe *Recorded at Royal Festival Hall, London, 18 February 1976 BBC (Legends) BBCL 4003-2: ADD (stereo) 1998 ![]()

[#3620] Brahms's 4th Symphony The refreshing directness of Toscanini's famous "magnificent sweep" is much in evidence in this 1935 Brahms Fourth. The recorded sound, not to worry, it's quite listenable. Before you count your rewards, spend a minute or so to read this first paragraph from the CD booklet. ![]()

[#3623] Il Trovatore Domingo 好靚仔喎 ----------------- I can still remember my teacher mentioned before popularity of Domingo is not due to he can sing very very well, but partly due to his 靚仔. Maybe due to this comment, I sometimes find Domingo's singing 嘮嘈 .

[#3625] Il Trovatore Agree with erictang. Mr Domingo's voice is a little 'thick' for the tenor (if you know what I mean) but his physique gives exellent stage presence (much more convincing than Pavarotti in the same role!).

[#3627] Brahms's 4th Symphony For Brahms 4, other than the usual suspects,in my case, Walter,Reiner,Kleiber, lets not forget George Szell. He is a good Brahmsian and gave a direct and precise account of the Brahms 4, expressive in the first movement, lyrical in the second, impetus in the third and electrifying in the final. The Cleveland Orchestra, under his tight grip, gave their best effort, with georgeous playing from each section and the inner voice clearly heard.

| [#3628] Verdd's Il Trovatore Finally finish the whole opera of Il trovatore after three night of listening. Verdi was a great opera composer, he can always make the story more dramatic with his music. I think Verdi got a good story this time, like Rigoletto, the story of Il trovatore is a tragedy cause by revenge, and unfortunately no owinner this time, Count Luna lose his lover and brother, Azucena( the Gypsy women) lose his son and adopted son, Leonora died for his lover, Manrico lose his own life, his lover and was killed by his brother. What a real tragedy! Although the CD use the photo of Callas ( act as Leonora ), the most impressive role in this opera was actually Azucena, the Gypsy women cast by mezzosorpano Fedora Barbieri. Azucena was probably the most miserable role Verdi ever written, her mother was burned to death by the count of Aragon, as a revenge she stole one of the two sons of Count of Aragon in a attempt to put him into the fire, but by mistake she put her own son into the fire instead. After she brought up the son she have stolen, her adopted son was killed by her brother. Fedora Barbieri's sing every word with tears, with a dark and cunning tone. Leonora cast by Callas was wonderfully performed, she can bring the role to live, her love for Marico, her tears when she have to sacrifice herself for the freedom of Marico was well performed. Di Stefano have a ringing tenor voice, I am sure Domingo will be put into shade if we consider tenor voice alone, I have to listen to Domingo's version for a fair comment. Recording was in MONO, constricted in both high frequency and low frequency, audiophil can ignor this disc, but true opera fan must not miss it, especially for impressive peformance of Fedora Barbieri. | [#3629] Interactive Discussion It is gratifying to see the emergence in this thread of some "truly" interactive discussions. That is, not just listing favorite versions; rather, putting a bit of dialogue and personal reaction into it. For me, for the same reason, sometimes it's more fun to read a negative reaction than to read a praise. I think the "interactive" nature has intensified recently, sign of the true maturity of this thread. |
