| [#3658] Tartini Devil's Trill On the "Devil's Trill", or Sonata No.4 in G minor, op.1 by Tartini, which has attracted violinists from Milstein to Vanessa-Mai, apart from the Oistrakh (EMI and Testament) and the Manze (HM) which have received universal acclaim, may I venture to suggest one more account: Ida Haendel plays Baroque Transcriptions 1. Corelli: Sonata for Violin/Recorder & Continuo "La Folia" (arr. Kreisler) 2. Nardini: Violin Sonata (arr. Flesch) 3. Tartini: Sonata for Violin and Continuo "Devil's Trill" (arr. Kreisler) 4. Vitali: Chaconne in G minor (arr. David) Ida Haendel (violin) / Geoffrey Parson (piano) [recorded in the 1970s] Testament SBT 1258: ADD 2002 I confess I have not listened to this one, but to me Haendel has never been less than marvelous (Beethoven, Brahms, Britten, Elgar, Sibelius, Walton ...). Her EMI Sibelius concerto (recorded in 1975 in Southampton [too bad its football team is relegated to the first division]) impresses me as having a real sense of style, particularly in the adagio di molto. My "Devil's Trill", however, is none of the above. It's played by Gil Shaham, found conveniently in the DG double CD entitled "Masters of the Bow" (US edition of the "Masters of the Violin"). It serves me fine, and I don't think I will be buying another CD specially for this piece of music. The only other Tartini that I have is found in this DG issue in its Galleria series (429 098-2): Boccherini: Cello Concerto No. 2 in D major Vivaldi: Cello Concerto in C major, RV 398 Tartini: Cello Concerto in A major Vivaldi: Cello Concerto in G major, RV 413 Mstislav Rostropovich / Collegium Musicum Zürich / Paul Sacher [r.1977] Rostropovich has a big presence, as indeed he performs his own cadenzas, which do not sound like baroque Italian. Not an important CD if you are not one of Rostropovich's fans. Last by not least, on violin showpieces, one would enjoy music more if we manage to steer clear of bragging fiddlers who care for concentrating on the trees at the expense of the wood. |

| [#3667] Devil's Trill again My final note on "Devil's Trill", has anyone here heard about this CD? Released by Naim Audio (NAIMCD 018), it is a likely candidate for the best-sounding version. The players are Yuval Yaron and Jeremy Denk. "So who, you may ask, is Yuval Yaron? Violin aficionados may already have encountered him, but the more general reader might like to know that he won First Prize at the 1975 Sibelius Competition in Helsinki, studied with Gingold and at Heifetz's masterclasses and is currently Professor of Violin at the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington, where his excellent pianist Jeremy Denk also serves and where Naim's recordings were." This is from the 2005 "Gramophone Guide", which has this to say about the "Devil's Trill": "This is truly beautiful violin playing, elegant in the opening Larghetto of Tartini's The Devil's Trill Sonata and with the truest intonation later on. The cadenza, too, is extremely brilliant, though never 'showy'."  |

| [#3668] Anda: Troubadour of the Piano Hi jonyung, erictang, and ALL, Much as I enjoy Géza Anda's Mozart piano concerto cycle (DG), his Brahms second concerto (DG), and his (heartbreaking) Chopin Etudes (Philips, Great Pianists series), I have not bought any of the eight Anda CDs by Testament. Sold at full price, they are too expensive for me. It's therefore great news to learn that DG will release this summer a 5-CD set (Géza Anda: Troubadour of the Piano) in the "Original Masters" series (477 528-9).  |

| [#3671] Anda: Troubadour of the Piano Corrigendum: I'm terribly sorry as I did not have the Philips "Great Pianists of the 20th Century Vol. 1 Géza Anda" with me, I made a mistake when I wrote earlier this morning at 9:54. It should have been the Chopin waltzes and not the etudes which are heartrending (I am listening to them now). They were recorded in 1975, less than a year before the great Romanian died. The recording is RCA property. For your information, it was Furtwängler who called Anda the "troubadour of the piano" -- a tribute to his singing and poetic quality in articulation and phrasing. |

He was the first pianist who recorded all of Mozart's piano concertos, conducting from the keyboard. I have listened to a few passages and find it very 'Anda' style (eg tempo, expression). |

| [#3675] 帕瓦羅蒂-- 巴黎舉辦的告別演唱會 I am not surprised, Cande. Am I too old to be taught new games? I find Pavarotti sing a lot less compellingly in "Ti adoro" than he did in the 70s. It's only understandable that he is no more in his top form, but my disappointment doesn't have much to do with the fact that the great tenor is getting on (born 1935) -- for he still has a commanding voice that delights -- no, it has much to do with the approach to music-making of the entire production team. The disc (Decca 475 002-2) is recorded in a reverberant acoustic, at the same time with close microphoning in capturing Pavarotti to produce the same level of voice we come to expect from the living legend. For fear that the disc/dish might not be palatable to general taste, generous doses of spices are added, so much so that the heavy orchestral accompaniments have effectively put this release into the "easy listening" category. You have the feeling that too much sound is being crowded into too small a space. Take for an example the final track "Caruso". We begin to hear a rather displeasing electronic guitar intrusion between the second and the third stanza, which then reappears with a vengeance competing with (or complimenting if you like) the human voice until the end of the song. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Jeff Beck on the guitar. Oh dear! Although the sweetness of tone, the clarity of diction, and above all the colourful expressiveness for which Pavarotti is famous is still there in this 2003 disc (it hasn't turned leathery yet, there are some glowing moments in, for instance, "Stella"), I am definitely returning to the straightforward communication offered in "The Essential Pavarotti" (Decca 430 210-1, "Made in W.Germany by PDO" -- whatever that means). All in all, I am left with the impression that "Ti adoro" is similar to many of the MSG-enhanced vocal CDs from our Mainland. I am not sure if we can get any closer to the singer in the more expensive SACD format (470 635-2). To be fair, "Ti adora" may do its bit in recruiting more listeners of classical vocal music, and that is commendable. It's not a bad thing if people make Pavarotti's first acquaintance through this disc, I can only hope that they would be sufficiently tempted to dig deeper into the wealth Pavarotti has reserved for us at the peak of his career. |
