[#3671] Brahms's Fourth George1977, I wonder how you would rate Walter's 1951 versions with the New York Philharmonic if you happen to have them (Urania, 2001 and Sony, 2004).

[#3672] Brahms's Fourth Trollope, Sorry that I could not comment since I never owned his mono account with NYPO in 1951-53. Eager to listen! BTW, my favourite mono accounts for Brahms Symphony Cycles also include Eugene Jochum / BPO (DGG), Arturo Toscanini /BBC SO (Testament) and Furtwangler (Music & Arts). George ![]()

[#3673] Brahms's Fourth As a general rule, Walter's NYPO performances are leaner and cleaner in their soundworld. The "special warmth" of his Indian summer, in no small part attributable to the LA musicians, is not usually found. The readings though are excellent and preferred by many.

[#3674] Furtwangler The Furtwangler CD in this set contains postwar Lugano performances in quite reasonable sound. The perfromance of Mozart's piano concerto #20 by Yvonne Lefebure is vital, even virile. The BPO pastorale is excellent. There's not smothering warmth nor cheap cartoonish tone-painting. "Scenes by the Brook" feels like gentle waves rippling, successive phrases lightly covering the track of what had gone before. The "storm" is not the rattling thing it sometimes is portrayed as. Excellent. ![]()

[#3675] Harnoncourt's Brahms I am delighted to see that there is a hot discussion of Brahms symphony No.4 on this thread. Last night, I listened to Brahms symphony by Harnoncourt and read the little booklet that come with CD which feature an interview with Harnoncourt on Brahms. Like Beethoven before him, Brahms's symphony come in pair, if you listen to symphony No.3 and 4 together, you will noticed the decending chord of the final movement of symphony No.3 is like a mirror image of the accending chords od symphony No.4. Another point Harnoncourt raised is that Brahms draw his inspiration from french baroque music, the final movement passacaglia is actually a dance rthythum from Baroque period. Harnoncourt reading was light and energetic, stress on the dancing rthythum rather than thick majestic sound that Klemperer and Furtwangler favored, with his insightful notes, I can understand Brahms symphony from another angle. ![]()

[#3685] Brahms Sym#4 Hi hercules and lym, Don't you think Stokowski's Brahms 4 is too hasty that details can't be aptly unfolded --- esp in the final mvt? Well, that's subjective i know, but his Mahler 2 on the same album I've got (RCA Gold Seal: pictured below) is great. ![]()

[#3688] Brahms Sym#4 Hello doctorjohn, Though I am not very impressed with Schuricht's Brahms 4th with VPO in 1965 (album pictured below), I see his mono Beethoven cycle on EMI as a yardstick interpretation in his times. More, his account of Missa Solemnis + Brahms First on is irresistably magnificent. The Missa, in clean and natural mono, is even better than Bohm's 195X version on DGG Original Masters. ![]()
