[#3757] Kyung Wha Chung _____________________________________________________ This one for you, Trollope! In Morris Zapp's view, the root of all the critical error was a na鴳e confusion of literature and life. Life was transparent, literature opaque. Life was an open, literature a closed system. Life was composed of things, literature of words. Life was what it appeared to be about… literature was never about what it appeared to be about, .....(even the dumbest critic understand that Hamlet wasn't about how the guy could kill his uncle, .......) The failure to keep the categories of life and literature distinct led to all kinds of heresy and nonsense…. . PP. 47-48 "Changing Places" by David Lodge. _____________________________________________________

[#3759] Brahms piano concertos Hello folks ! Earlier i was setting out to look for more Brahms piano concertos (PC) to listen to. In addition to the Jochum-Gilels set on DG, i have got the Backhaus-Bohm No.2 set on Decca. The latter collaboration should be regarded as superb: the flow is very comfortable and Bohm playing is milder and delightful, which is characteristic of his Mozart readings. Now i am waiting for the Metha-Rubinstein's No.1 set... well, it's in stereo and i just want to get an idea of how AR plays these 2 pieces. i am no AR expert. Also waiting for Richter's No.2 on EMI redline ... Will borrow the Pollini set too. Which other versions are exciting and worth collecting? __________ Hello tanuski, trollope and DL, do u have some recommendations too ? Cheers.

[#3760] Brahms piano concertos Hi Wal, I would also like to get the Backhaus/Bohm. Apart from Jochum/Gilels DG set, below is my collection; I have not compared them side by side. Piano Concerto No. 1 Philips Concertgebouw Orchestra/Haitink/Arrau Philips Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Abbado/Brendel Decca Concertgebouw Orchestra/Haitink/Ashkenazy Piano Concerto No. 2 DG Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra/Abbado/Pollini Philips Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra/Abbado/Brendel Decca Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra/Haitink/Ashkenazy My Ashkenazy is LP (DDD), I'm not sure if there is CD as I have not seen it before. ![]()

[#3761] Brahms piano concertos Hi everyone, Brahms 2nd PC is my most favourite PC, I have Gilels, Polini, Bachaus and Serkin. And I like Serkin's most. So powerful, almost on the blink of being violent at some passage though.

[#3765] Brahms piano concertos Hi wal, erictang, jL, and ALL, I also have the DG Gilels set. There are four more Brahms No.1 that I have: Barenboim / Philharmonia Orchestra / Barbirolli (1967); Serkin / Cleveland Orchestra / Szell (1968); Arrau / Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra / Haitink (1969); & Brendel / BPO / Abbado (1986). How fresh and inspired young Barenboim was (at 25): a ravishingly beautiful performance. And the sound has splendid presence too. The Serkin is rather dry in piano timbre but the playing is characterized by an output of possibly the highest voltage. Arrau's reading is big-scaled and very satisfying, but a bit contrived. The sound is more than acceptable. The warm-toned and lyrical Brendel is well-worth having, now available at mid-price coupled with the No.2 (446 925-2). Five out of the nine versions of No.2 that I have are played by Richter! So I am hopelessly biased. Top choice: SR with Leinsdorf / Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1960) from RCA. In comparison, his EMI issue with Maazel is less majestic and less memorable. My other three versions (Doremi, Urania, and Ankh) are only for nutty Richter collectors who have their heads in the clouds or in the sand. Apart from Richter, Anda / BPO / Karajan (1968) is my favourite on Sunday evenings. Poetic is the adjective here. (There is a 1962 mono Anda version with Kubelík, but I do not own it.) Backhaus with the VPO under the baton of Schuricht (1952) suffers from limited dynamics of sound, though the piano tone remains firm enough, which helps much in presenting an intense reading. Zimerman's 1984 live recording with VPO and Bernstein brings back to us many fond memories of young Barenboim, if anything Zimerman (at 28) is even more spirited (if not more enthralling), probably inspired by the enthusiasm of the great conductor. I suspect that Zimerman switches to more and more conducting partly because of the influence of Bernstein. My next investment in No.1 would probably be the 1962 Curzon / LSO / Szell (Decca Legends), and I am also considering joining our friend Tansuki in buying the Gilels No.2 (Chicago Symphony Orchestra / Reiner) in xrcd24 format (JVC). There is a very famous 1939 Backhaus account with Bohm (Joy Sound), but I am worried about the sound quality.

[#3769] To ...... is human Dear friends, "21th" should obviously have been "21st". I have been writing "20th" for too long, so much so that I fear I am going to have the greater portion of my lifespan in the 20th and not in the 21st century. "albo lapillo notare diem": a Latin phrase, "to mark the day with a white stone, to decide that it has been a happy day."

[#3770] Herr Brahms Hello, erictang, trollope and friends, I am interested in getting the Brendel/Abbado set. But is it from Philips or DG? I haven’t been able to find its info – but a 3CD set of ‘complete concertos’ (473 267-2). Talking of Brendel, have you come across the Beethoven piano concertos in collaboration with Rattle? I am also curious about it. As for Barenboim, I don’t have a very deep impression of him though I own his Beethoven PCs with Klemperer (by the way, I am a BIG Klemperer fan!) Well, I did consider the 1962 Curzon / LSO / Szell (Decca Legends) when I bought the Backhaus/Bohm set. But the other work also included in the album is unknown to me, so… When I saw the Anda / BPO / Karajan (1968), I hesitated because of Karajan (haha!). Having read your comment here, I may try it as the album also includes the delightful Grieg pc. One question: is the 1962 mono Anda version with Kubelík also on DG ?

[#3771] Tchaikovsky? By the way, what aobut Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli? I got his Beethoven and Mozart pcs in live performances on DG. Though the tempi with the Beethoven pcs are slow (perhaps because both Giulini and B-M have grown older), the sound is warm and very lyrical. (I love Beethoven pc no. 3 the most, then nos. 1&4). Let’s also talk about Tchaikovsky’s pc no.1 ! My collection includes: 1. Curzon/Solti (not impressive), 2. Gilels/Metha (electrifying/ sweeping – lacking depth especially in the 1st mvt, wondering about the Reiner set), 3. Horowitz/ Toscanini (, Richter/Karajan (romantic/ lyrical), 4. Rubinstein/Ormandy (stereo version, just so-so) Now I would like to add a few more to my tiny collection. What do you think?

[#3776] Brahms Hi wal and ALL, My Brahms 1st concerto by Brendel with BPO and Abbado is the same as the one posted by erictang. Brendel's mid-price 1+2 concertos with BPO and Abbado are now only available in a Philips 5-CD box-set (446 925-2), coupled with Brahms' solo piano music and a collection of Schumann. On your inquiry about the 1962 mono Anda with Kubelík playing Brhams' No.2, no it's not on DG, it is on Orfeo, coupled with a stereo Beethoven No.1 concerto. I have seen it not too long ago at HK Records in Festival Walk (about HK$89). The most recently released Michelangeli CD, as far as I know, is from Music & Arts: Mozart's No.20 concerto (Karl Münchinger / Stuttgart Philharmonic Orch. / 1967) and Beethoven No.3 sonata (1975). The most interesting Richter issue this April is NOT an audio one. ![]()
