[#3730] Mozart's Serenade Bady don't want to sleep at late at 1:00 am last night, some music to put him to sleep again. Haffner serenade is actually a demanding piece for the first violinist, the famous `rondo' always remind me of the music of Paganini, this serenade sound like a violin concerto. Vegh playing was clean elegant and tasteful, aided by demonstrative grade recording, I have no reason to complaint, baby fall asleep easily under these cheerful music. ![]()

[#3731] Grieg's Cello Sonata Eric, I got my Grieg's cello sonata on Naxos recently, the recording was in fine digital, with red hot playing from native Norway cellist, I found it a good introduction to Grieg's cello sonata. ![]()

[#3734] Borodin Trio I have to take exception with chaikaiming on his choice of trios. While I haven't listened to their Beethoven, their playing on just about everything I have heard completely outdistance those by the Beaux Arts. It's a pity the Chandos are rarer and more expensive, hence less well known. They are definitely not only good for Russian works!

[#3737] Vegh/Beethoven Sometime ago, while chankaiming was doing his listening of Beethoven Quartets as well as Sandor Vegh, I was rearranging my CDs on the shelf. As usual, I spot check some CDs if the outer case seems musty. So I checked on my old VALOIS set of Vegh Quartet's Beethoven cycle. I was really upset to see mold on them. I was devastated when I saw some small holes on 2 of them, the largest 1 mm in diameter. So much for the indestructibility of CDs. I urge you to check on your CDs periodically. Please remove the foam from box sets too while you're at it. So I played the CD with the holes in it. Miraculously the CD did not skip. And I was once again thoroughly reminded of the humanity of the Vegh's readings. Not the tighest Beethoven, the Veghs sometimes does not move as much as some others, but there is a singing, conversational quality that must be central to a good chamber performance. Sandor Vegh's violin playing is sinuous and mesmerizing. This set should sell for the price of 4 CDs, but in HK sometimes that is not true. ![]()

[#3740] Vegh Quartet For practically its entire lifetime the Vegh Quartet consists of Sandor Vegh, Zoltan Zoldy, first and second violins; Georges Janzer, viola; Paul Szabo, cello. Although Vegh is the determining factor, the other 3 are all musicians of the highest caliber. Georges Janzer is likely even better known as the violist of the Grumiaux Trio, so beloved by members here. Paul Szabo also appears with Grumiaux in Philips' Schubert Quintet in C. However, great as he sounds in the Vegh Quartet, his crowning achievement on CD to me is this pricelss chamber music recording: ![]()

[#3741] Hungarian Quartet On of the best Beethoven bargains are the cycles by the Hungarian Quartet on French EMI. There are various incarnations. Pictured is just one of them. I just compared the rather inscrutable Op 74. I still prefer the Vegh's account. However, the Hungarians are more secure and blended, a little straightforward in comparison with the Veghs, but not with lesser quartets. The relationship between Sandor Vegh and the Hungarian quartet makes interesting reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_Quartet ![]()

[#3742] Hungarian Trio Since we're on Trios... In the superbargain Hungarian Quartet Beethoven set there is a substantial filler: Although the pianist is not the most inspiring, with the strong playing of the 2 string players, Beethoven's "Archduke" trio is given a meticulously balanced and crafted performance by the little known Hungarian Trio, comprising George Solchany, piano; Arpad Gerecz, violin; Vilmos Palotai, cello. Arpad Gerecz made some recordings with Grumiaux, and Palotai was cellist for the Hungarian quartet for 20 years. The Hungarian Trio recorded the entire Beethoven trios. However, they are only available in the mega Beethoven set (together with the Hugarian Quartet's cycle). Given the absurd price of the set, one is almost tempted to buy the set for these, and more. ![]()

[#3743] Kodaly Quartet It''s amazing how many great quartets Hungary has produced. From before, Vegh, Hungarian, Tatrai, Bartok...Now still playing: Takacs, Eder, Kodaly. The Kodaly play a vey engaging Op 59/3, urgent and with fire. Yet, comparison with the Vegh shows the latter, though slower, to be even more dramatic and detailed, one of the very best in their cycle. The Kodaly though, as a cycle, needs concede little to any past giants. Another bargain from the Naxos stable. I'm missing only 2 volumes. ![]()

[#3744] Kodaly Quartet To me, it is not too amazing that Hungarian or central european produce great Quartet one after the other . In the past, quartet or any chamber music are written for family to play in their gathering, most quartet are simple in technique. This is like playing Majong when our family gather, so Hungarian play Quartet as good as we play Majong.
