[#3774] Szell's 1959 Brahms Fourth
Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98
NDR-Sinfonieorchester / George Szell (1959, Hamburg)
EMI (NDR Klassik) 4 76735 2: ADD (mono) 2004

Szell's 1959 live recording is of more than passing interest.

Like Wand's version with the same orchestra (1985), Szell's is steady and controlled, but without a trace of heavy treatment.

Szell excels in the last two movements – strong and mercurial; but his Andante moderato (11:48) is quite charismatic too, to which he brings a warm and long-lined lyricism.

With a giant's strength but not a touch of pseudo-profundity, this is a version full of vitality. Its major drawback lies in the fact that it was recorded nearly half a century ago in monaural. Had it been recorded with a greater presence, I can easily imagine that this would have been a much more valuable recorded Brahms Fourth.

(Next on my listening list are two 1951 versions of Bruno Walter conducting the New York Philharmonic.)

I'm revisiting the Act I love duet in Tosca between Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano, who just passed away. Here's the link of the obituary found in the music.classical newsgroup:

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/03/03/arts/Obit-Di-Stefano.php

A sad case indeed. Although not my favorite tenor, he is no doubt one of the great tenors from the last century. He'll be sorely missed.

Sorry to hear that Di Stefano have passed away, as mention before he have a italian ringing tone, lyrical and sunny.

I don't know that he is still alive, he is one of the greatest tenor in 1950s.

[#3778] Mozart's Figaro
Listened to Act III of Mozart's `Marriage of Figaro', I was once again amazed by the talent of Mozart. Mozart's opera will not give you the emotional impact of Verdi, but every aria was full of lovely melody, I especially love the Sextet in the scene where Figaro was found by Marcellina to be her lost son, the reaction of different people was so vividly depict by Mozart's music.

This Sextet is a good testing material for audiophil too, with six singers on stage, changing postion from time to time, a very good test on system's abiltiy to reproduce sound stage.

[#3779] Brahms
hello trollope,

I am waiting for yet a few more CDs (if any) of Brahms 4th from Percival, so hopefully more listening and water-blowing.

And ... would you mind making a CDR copy of Toscanini's account on EMI for me? Will contact you for the 'transaction' next week.

Thanks a lot!

[#3780] In memoriam - Di Stefano

Whereas we enjoy his top performances in Donizetti and Puccini operas, Di Stefano's account in Verdi's Requiem and Italian songs are also well worth noting.

[#3782] Mozart's Figaro
Finally finished the whole opera of Mozart's `Marriage of Figaro', a wonderful opera indeed. The story is quite difficult to follow, especially during the recitative I often get lost, in spite of that I still found this opera hugely enjoyable.

Comment on individual singer's performance is meaningless, as every singer play their role perfectly in a fresh voice with little vibrato, match nicely with the energetic `historically informed' performance of Concerto Kohn under the `neoclassical' style conducting of Rene Jacob.

Harpsichord player was more than a accompanist in this excellent performance, with his innovative playing, he can always heighten the drama.

Thr recording by Harmonic Mundi was demonstrative grade with pin point sound image and clear and trueful recording. Audiophil should not miss out this demonstration disc with such a wonderful music.

Mozart's music was a sound from heaven, every aria, duet, sextet was filled with wonderful melody, the reason I take that long to finish the whole is because I have to listen to the aria again after each act.

The package was wonderful too, with a 250 page libretto in full color, a nicely design paper box and a beautiful case to store the three CD, this is the most luxurious I have ever seen. The whoe package ask for just $ 298 for 3 SACD, what else could you complain.

All in all, a must have for music love as well as audiophil.

[#3783] Mozart's Figaro
chankaiming,

The plot of Figaro goes very fast so everybody feels lost at the first listening (and second and third for me). A DVD with English subtitles would be very helpful. Here is a very nice one, with traditional staging and a starry cast. Von Stade's Cherubino is unsurpassed!

[#3784] Mozart's Figaro
CKM,

I am not an opera fan, but I like Rene Jacobs Marriage of Figaro very much.
It has a different style compared with other versions , may I say, modern period performance.
The sound is excellent, unfortunately I do not have a SACD player, but the playing of the SACD on my CD produces demonstration level performance.

[#3786] Schubertiade

When I bought this MEMBRAN set at the recent HMV sale for $98 (reduced from $128), it was the last set I saw in any of the branches, which meant many people had bought it, so I refrained from posting about it.

This set contains more treasures per second playing time than anything else from the classical MEMBRAN catalogue (the jazz offerings being another story). Some of the content is difficult to get even at full price on esoteric labels.

This set is sure to be offered again by HMV in the future. If you see it, grab it for some of the most famous historical performances. Of course, sound is just average, but the chamber stuff sound clear.

The only caveat, and a serious one, is the trashy "artwork" of the box (inside OK), unfortunately not up to the level of the same label's jazz boxes.

View the content and be amazed:

[#3787] Schubertiade

CD7 showcases the BUSCH QUARTET, one of my favorites.

In D.810 I was really perked up by the galloping string figures, so immaculately rendered, almost picturesque (just my imagination due to the "title"). Immaculate blend.

However, it was the little known D.112 that captured my heart. This trenchent performance is the same as in the superb EMI box set (which does NOT include D.810).

It was so good that I dug out the EMI set and listened to it again. The EMI transfer is, needless to say, superior (God knows how Membran do their "transfers") but they are quite close.
