Hello friends,

After enjoying the St John Passion from Karl Richter's x2 DG set and from Jochum's highlights on Eloquence, I have ordered the following and happily waiting ... for the voices of Wunderlich, Gruemmer and Christa Ludwig.

I am also looking for one or two more Mass in b minor to add to my collection, do u have any cool recommendations?

Don't you worry a thing. Mine is semi-antique. Probably from 30 years ago also.

It is too bad that they do not even put down the printing date in the book. The only note I found is the 3 volumes cost$11.50 HK dollars when it was brand new.

Hi, Tanuski, mine, I think, is a better edition, published in two volumes in 1974 by 中華書局 in HK, priced at $18.

And the Bach I am now listening to is this (Hi, Wal):

Bach's chamber works are relaxing and choral works serene and soothing. For instance, the b minor mass calms you down and prepares you for a tranquil emotional state. Frankly, I have sought comfort in it when i feel exhausted - perhaps the effect will be enhanced with an extra Red Bull. oh...

Amongst Bach's great mass works, St Matthew Passion is my favourite.

I watched a ballet performance based on this works in 2003 by a Germany Ballet Group, it was nice.

Yes, Matthew Passion is by all means a great piece of work for its music and form. You don't have to be religious to enjoy it! It just appeals to your senses.
I also have your Eloquence highlight and Richter's 1958 (or 1959?) version (now on DG Original) and Klemperer's EMI set are the 2 best definitive recordings of the work:

Recorded 1984 at St John's, Smith Square, London. Has anyone among us been there? It's a great place famous for its concerts and art exhibitions. There is a wonderful restaurant there called The Footstool offering British cuisine par excellence.

It's within walking distance from the Westminster Abbey.

Hi Trollope and all,

I have been listening to the two Annie Fischer's Beethoven Piano Sonata (that you shipped) repeatedly. And the music started to grow in me.

In the dark side of my mind, I can see the shadow of Argerich flickering back and forth while the stereo sings the melody. Of course the two musicians are quite different. One is present and the other belongs to the past. There is certain element that links them together, even though their styles are not the same.
It is too bad that I never learn any music instruments, say piano, when I grew up (shame on HK’s education system!) Or else I can be more precise to point out the pro and con (between the two) in technical terms.

After all both pianists attract me through their strength. In a way Argerich is more physical. She attacks the Steinway. While Fischer is more reserved (relatively speaking.) Do not get me wrong, Fischer has/ had very strong will too. It all shows/ recorded in the performance. Her power is subtle and well kept. It is mental, psychological.

Please do not ask who is a better player. That is beyond the point. 'Cause they are both excellent.

Wal,
Karl Richter is a classic. But you should also listen to Elliot Gardiner, he has a set of complete Bach choral work.
If you want to listen to a different intrepretation, listen to Celibidache Bach Mass ub B Minor from the lastest set from EMI. He always played it differently. Hope EMI is releasing this as seperate 2CD set.

Yes, Gardiner should be a good one, but i just have his Beethoven Missa Solemnis - a very satisfying experience. I have also noticed Celibidache's b minor mass; i am interested in it (+ the Mozart Requiem). I bought the Verdi Requiem earlier - on drawback is that i find the tenor too 'opera'.

thanks for the suggestion. I will go and buy the Beethoven Missa Solemnis. I got the Otto Klempner on EMI and would like to compare.
ARCHIV has a gift set of all Bach's Choral work which include the Mass in B minor, St Matthew and Christmas Oratorio. It is prices very competitively, 9CD set for less then HKD300 (cannot remember the exact price I paid)

Talking about Gardiner, does anyone of you here have any CDs of the Choir of New College, Oxford, mostly from Hyperion?

I find this Choir rather good, and would venture to say that, at least in Handel, it's on a par with Gardiner's The Monteverdi Choir. My personal experience of its daily routine of evensong informs me that the New College Choir is certainly in no way inferior to the perhaps more famous choir at Magdalen College.

If you like Bach's St John Passion, the Choir's recording from Naxos (8.557296-97) should be worth exploring. Its latest CD release celebrates the college's founder who died 600 years ago in 1404.

New College has stunningly beautiful cloister and garden. The College is so named because it was founded as recently as 1379, two hundred years after the University came into existence. I attach here a picture I took in 1989. Pardon my poor quality scanning from the original photo.

Just get the Beethoven Symphony No.5 played by
Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra/Giulini recorded in 1982 (DG).

Giulini's tempo is slow relatively, but it flows very evenly and firm. Both recording and perfomance are impressive.

[#3897] Suddenly Fidelio
Hello dear friends,

I've been listening to Knappertsbusch's Fidelio these 2 days. A very 'standard' and elegant performance in the league of Klemperer's.
Peerce's Florestan could be better than the much overly praised Patzak (with the greatest Flagstad and Furtwangler).

Also interesting and exciting is Fricsay's high quality stereo set. what do you think?
