[#3898] Suddenly Fidelio Hi Trollope, The Beethoven Symphony No.5 played by Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra/Giulini recorded in 1982 (DG) is a 2nd LP from 2nd record/book shop in Central. I also get the No.6 also by LAPO/Giullini (1980 DG). Sonically, the No. 6 is not as good. I have only listened to 3rd, 4th & 5th movements, it is good performance-wise. Infact, I have not compared the Beethoven Symphony with other performers. Also get a Philips record on Tartini Violin Sonatas played by Baroque instrument.

[#3899] Suddenly Bartok Hi trollope, erictang and all, Recently still digging Bartok's violin concertos. I have been listening to those as below and find expressively characteristic on every performance. No.1 Stern / Ormandy (1961) No.2 Stern / Bernstein (1958) No1&2 Midori / Mehta (1990) No.1&2 Kyung Wha Chung / Solti (1984, 1977) ...( It would help if one reads a brief account of his life before listening to his music: Bartök is one of the most unhappiest composers )..by trollope

[#3900] Karajan > Beethoven Hello friends, Have you ever come across this set? Just happened to find it on Amazon. Mr K collaborates with the Philharmona and the LPO here, so I guess this could give an 'alternative Karajan' (perhaps?) experience as opposed to his 3 other Berlin remakes of the symphony cycle. I've just heard:the 1963 5th, 6th and 9th; the 1970s & 1980s 9ths. Any comments? Cheers. ![]()

[#3903] Beethoven Hi Wal, I own no complete set of Beethoven's symphonies, and I wonder whether there can be a generally agreed definitive one. Even among Karajan's three BPO cycles, none can be considered to sweep the board. But if I have some money to burn, I will buy Karajan's last BPO cycle in the 24-bit Gold made-in-Japan edition.

[#3906] Beethoven Hi trollope, You are right. There is hardly a complete set in which every symphony is played to our own satisfaction (i.e. 'ear-pleasing'). I also started buying 2 symphonies (on one CD) from one conductor and then the rest from the others. The 'bad' result is that I end up having 3 Fifths by Klemperer (all from different times) and similar repetition problems. Now I may be hunting for Reiner's 5th, 7th and 9th on RCA. ![]()

[#3908] Edo de Waart's Mahler To close the current Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra season, Edo de Waart will conduct, on this Friday and Saturday, Mahler's Fifth Symphony. The Minnesota Orchestra performed this symphony in de Waart's very first concert as its Music Director (the Orchestra's eighth), a position he held from 1986 to 1995. In the next season came Mahler's Second and Seventh; the season after that Mahler's First and Fifth again. De Waart's passion for Mahler is endless. "I could do all ten of his symphonies every year and never get tired of them." De Waart told "Stereophile" in 1991, "If you are a symphony orchestra in the twentieth century and want to be judged by what you can do, you should be looking at pieces like Mahler's. Let's face it, there is the greatest challenge in that music. I think when you can do those symphonies well and in a way that moves people and tells them something, it's like you have become master of your craft." [Source: CD booklet that comes together with the 12-CD set "Minnesota Orchestra at One Hundred", released 2003] It is a pity that we are only left with only seven recordings of de Waart's Minnesota years, far fewer than he had planned, mainly because Virgin Classics veered off to a new, rock-oriented direction in the middle of de Waart's tenure, forcing the Orchestra to look elsewhere. There is a CD from Telarc and another from EMI Angel. There is also one from Koch, but I have not even seen it. To most music lovers, the only Mahler CD of de Waart's Minnesota years is the First (recorded April 1989), released by Virgin. But in fact the Fourth is, well, in a way, also available. Two seasons after de Waart had left the Minnesota Orchestra, he returned to guest-conduct it and we have now, in Vol.11 of the set mentioned above, a live broadcast (4 April 1997) from the Minnesota Public Radio archive of the Fourth (Susan Graham, mezzo). The sound is good stereo radio transmission, a bit stagnant though; and the performance is smooth and gentle. De Waart is well into the Mahlerian idiom. His "unambitious" approach is similar to Inbal's on Denon. As de Waart puts it, "Of all the Mahler symphonies, the Fourth is one of my two or three favorites. It requires a refinement of playing. The others you can power your way through and the audience may love it. But the Fourth is the most like chamber music, especially that soft, beautiful last movement." To come back to de Waart's only widely available Mahler: the First Symphony (Virgin Classics). It receives a terrible review in "The Penguin Guide" (Yearbook 1991). I have not listened to it, but certainly there is another Mahler First from this Orchestra whose importance is beyond comparison: Dimitri Mitropoulos's is the world premiere recording -- perhaps the most significant entry in the Orchestra's discography. The Minnesota Orchestra was called Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra until 1968. Classical music lovers in this forum need hardly be reminded that its most famous recording is the 1958 stereo "1812" (Antal Dorati) from Mercury Living Presence. End of my teabreak.

[#3910] Beethoven Wal: The Carl Schuricht EMI Beethoven set ("Les Introuvables" series") is mono but in excellent sound. And personally I think it belongs to the very top. Unfortunately little known. I did not know French EMI issued the Cluytens BPO/Beethoven series (I've them on cfP LP's and Seraphim CDs)! It is excellent, as is usual with this conductor. It should be super-budget and a great buy! IMHO the Decca Schmidt-Isserstedt Beethoven box is worth it to have the Backhaus performances. Also the Beethoven perfromances are very lyrical. I do not often take to this conductor, but recently I listened to an Arlecchino (ARL130) CD of his Brahms 2 + 3 and I was positively stunned by his lyricism. Ah...these lesser known conductors! They are GREAT conductors. Trollope: DeWaart? Hmmm....:-)

[#3911] Rejoice, Rejoice greatly! Hi doctorjohn, Yes. Schuricht is good at Beethoven, and Brahms too! It's really bad that the Schmidt-Isserstedt set is deleted - why?!! Do you have other 'rare' recommendations to share with us? +++ Besides, Fricsay is one of my top favourite conductors. And after too much waiting and a bit of ado, I've finally managed to get the U.S. edition of Beethoven Triple Concerto + Brahms Double Concerto on DG Originals !! I couldn't get the old 'Dokument' edition, and it's not available in HK... : ] ![]()

[#3917] Backhaus Piano concertos Hello trazom, My favourite Beethoven concerto is No.3. The versions played by Richter and by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (both on DG Original) are specially fantastic for the playign the recording quality. I have not tried Cliburn. But I have got the Reiner/ Gilels Tchaikovsky PC No.1 on RCA - powerful but restrained (especially with Reiner's accompaniment).
