[#3910] Bruch's violin concerto by Heifetz Speaking of French music, just listened to Debussy's piano works-images, by Walter Gieseking. He gave a demonstration of how Debussy should be played, dream like impressionist. In playing Debussy, he is still unsurpassed, not even by Michelangeli.

[#3911] Saint Saens's piano concerto For Saint Saen's piano concerto, I like his No.2, especially the opening. The "big" chord in the 1st movement (CD 1 Track 4 at 1min 22sec) sounds a like the ones in Mozart's "Don Giovanni, a Cenar Teco " ![]()

[#3912] Saint Saens's piano concerto Listened to Saint-Saens piano concerto No.2 (played by Ciccolini, Roge respectively) & No.4 (by Roge) just now. For No.2, I prefer the dark atmosphere of Pascal Roge's performance which matches its key, g minor. Though Roge's recording sounds dimmer while Ciccolini's sounds brighter. I find No.4 is easy to listen and enjoyable, there is an interesting tune in the 3rd movement. ... and the piano leads the orchestra into a new brief but energetic theme, oddly resembling the popular song "The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo." ... extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No._4_(Saint-Sa%C3%ABns) ![]()

[#3914] Carmen - Havanaise Listened to four recordings of "Carmen - Havanaise" this morning. Below is my preference: 1. Callas/Pretre (EMI), the best actor on top of singer. 2. Berganza/Abbado (DG), the least fiery, and her Carmen is quite different from my perception on "gypsy". 3. de Los Angeles/Beecham (EMI), she is also acting. 4. Resnit/Schippers (Decca), Resnit's 唱 is not as good as Berganza. Callas/Pretre (EMI) ![]()

[#3920] Milstein's Bach Last night, start off with a DVD concerto of Andy Lau inorder to prove to my wife that my Hi Fi system worth every penny. Frankly speaking, Andy lau improve al lot as a singer. Thereafter, listened to Bach's uncompanied violin Sonata played by Milstein. Milstein was at his in 1950, despite the Mono recording, Milstein violin tone was vividly captured. Milstein playing was always enegertic and lively, Grumiaux was too polite by comparison. ![]()

[#3922] Walter Another Walter- Walter Gieseking. Besides Debussy, his Mozart is equally famous. Listened to his Mozart piano concerto K330 and 332. He played with flair and finesse, his touch light and delicate. Jovial at times but melancholic when the music required, especially in the slow movements. He just brought out the essence of Mozart.

[#3927] Mozart's mass Following Bach's Mass in B minor, I am more and more interested in the exploration of church music, yesterday I found the following disc in HMV for just $49, it was Mozart's `Great mass' performed by Karajan and soloist. I need some more listening to have a fair comment, but the performance of the sorpano Barbara Hendricks really stand out. ![]()

[#3929] church/ religious music hello CKM, since you 開呢個盤, i strongly recommend Beethoven's Missa Solemnis; and if you've come across it already, try the Klemperer one - it's simply THE best! (... and probably his Bach B-minor mass too.) ![]()
