[#3978] Handel's complete violin sonatas _______________________________ Hi guys, Welcome back and thanks for the lovely pictures of England, Trollope. Glad you like the book "Alienist" as much as I am. I bought 2 more of the Annie Fischer music. The EMI's Mozart Piano Concertos Nos. 21 & 22 is a total knock out. The Philharmonia Orchestra is average, but the music is pure enjoyment. The Palexa's Mozart Concerto no.22 & Beethoven Concerto no. 3 is a heart breaker. The performance of the Concertgebouw with Klemperer and Radio Symphonique de Berlin with Fricsay are wonderful. Unfortunately the life recording is not good. The piano note was not as crisp as the EMI. That took away most of the excitement… _______________________________ ![]()

[#3982] Handel's complete violin sonatas Hi trazom, This harmonia mundi CD is highly praised by both the Gramophone and the Penguin Guide, but I find it tiresome to listen to more than 76 minutes of Manze's 1782 violin and am grateful for Egarr's contribution of harmonic filling from the harpsichord, which is lighter and friendlier to the ear. The close microphoning produces a larger than life image of the period violin, and so isn't exactly baroque in flavour. My overall impression is that this is a strange thing and I wonder whether it can be as universally appealing as the Gramophone claims that it must be. The music is certainly not dull, and there is no lack of charming moments from the various larghettos, largos, or adagios. But let us be frank, they are not in the league of Handel's concerti grossi, not to mention his vocal music. But since the price is right, I think it hasn't been a bad decision to buy it. For Handel's chamber music, the 9-CD box set (470 893-2) from Philips is my top recommendation, in which the violin sonatas are played by Iona Brown (violin) and Nicholas Kraemer (harpsichord). They are more subtle in musical expression and there is a feeling of gentility (not in the derogatory sense) in this partnership that I find easy to live with, for hours. ![]()

[#3991] Missa solemnis: Giulini's studio recording Hi trazom, Yedang YCC-0033 is sold at a substantially reduced price thanks, I think, to the appearance of the 5-CD Brilliant Classic box-set (92229), which features the three sonatas in disc 1. These Moscow recordings (1972, 1965, 1975) originates from the Russian label Revelation RV 10096. And, many thanks for your supporting words.
