| [#3999] Mahler 4 Just got Mahler Symphony No.4 by Horenstein on EMI Classics for Pleasure - a good bargain of $65. Looked forward to his rendition for some time already but those on BBC legends are a bit expensive for a start.  |

| [#4006] Symphonie Espagnole, Op.21 Among these two CDs in my collection: [1] Lalo: Symphonie espagnole, op. 21 Vieuxtemps: Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 5 in A minor, op.37 Saint-Saëns: Introduction & Rondo capriccioso, op. 28 Shlomo Mintz (violin) / Israel Philharmonic Orchestra / Zubin Mehta [October 1988, Tel Aviv] DG 427 676-2: DDD 1991 [2] Saint-Saëns: Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, op. 61 Lalo: Symphonie espagnole in D minor, op. 21 Joshua Bell / Orchestre symphonique de Montréal / Charles Dutoit [September 1988, Montréal] Decca (New Best 100) UCCD-5062: DDD 2003 ... the Decca is slightly richer more exciting in sound, sometimes a bit thick; the DG is smoother. In terms of performance, I think Mintz is better by some margin. I have not had the chance to listen to Miss Chung's rendition, but I will not be surprised if she surpasses both Mintz and Bell, for she seems to be a natural Lalo advocate. |

| [#4012] Kovacevich's Emperor on Philips Hi Eric, I am not sure whether this is the best version for this concerto, but I am quite certain this is a lot more satisfying than the EMI version with Kovacevich as soloist and conductor (Australian Chamber Orchestra). The EMI is already quite superb, but this Philips version with the LSO and Sir Colin Davis seems to produce a more muscially sensible speed, so that Beethoven's voice is grand but not cold. The 1969 recordinbg is admirable. Philips has issued a 2-CD set of Beethoven's nos. 1-4 concertos with Kovacevich and Sir Colin, the orchestra is the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Duo 442 577). Currently this "Emperor" is probably not individually available except in this Virtuoso edition. One has to go for another Philips Duo (442 580). But I don't want the couplings there, so I bought this one when I saw it in Manchester. And the No. 30 sonata (r. 1978) is more than a fill-up. The final movement is very moving. |
