| [#398] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Gordan, Tungar rectification was not designed for ball tube filaments, theoretically, it is workable but it could be much noisier than other rectification methods. WE46 uses battery to power up the 2x205D because the amp needs a quiet platform to perform its best. I'm sure we are on the right track in the case of WE44A, what we have not tried before is the battery model and the transitor model. I would not care about the battery one cos it diminishes the tone color of the ball tubes, and there is no more stock of the WE transistors. What actually I wish to try is to ask Mr Wu to rewind the input trans with an aim to reduce further gain so that the overall gain is maintained within 30db.This cannot be compensated by reducing the volume pot as the Daven att sounds its best at 1 o'clock position, at 11 o'clock or less, the att is not linear.So I have to adjust the volume pot of my power amp to get a linear/flat response.Yes, this is a bloody compromise,its all because of the addictive nature of the WE ball tubes.After having the 44A in my system for 3 months, I can't go back to my other preamps, I rather not listening to any music if it is not the 44A in the loop.Mr Wu will kill me if I post the question about rewinding the input trans....... |

It has to set at 12 / 1 o'clock or higher to sound good. due to the gain of 44A (and perhaps the gain of my power amp too), i need to set vol to 11' most of the time. it sounds boring at 11' or lower. a lower gain input trans is a good idea :-) |

| [#400] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Bambino, I didn't know you have the 44A. The 44A can be, or should I say must be adjusted to blend into a specific system. Any change in the value of the caps, be it the plate voltage, the cathode or the filaments could significantly alter the sound or even the character of the 44A, not to mention the HV chokes. Since the day this preamp stays in the house, it keeps amazing me on how it can improve day after day, the internal wires connecting the input/output are important as well, do try it, have fun. |
