[#3990] Grieg's piano sonata and Cello sonata Last night, listened to Grieg's piano and Cello sonata, Grieg's music was always delightful and tuneful, and these two works are no exception, its lovely melody is heart melting from the very beginning, wonderful playing by native Norway player in clear and vivid digital sound. ![]()

[#3992] Verdi's La Traviata Listened to Act I of La Traviata last night, the famous recording with Carlo Kleiber on the podium and Cotrubas as Violetta, Domingo as Alfredo. In contrast to most Traviata recording, the star in this recording was Carlo Kleiber, his energetic dramatic conducting made this recording of Traviata a most exciting one. Cotrubas sang beautifully, but she is not Callas or Sutherland, her acting of Violetta was by no means as moving as Callas and her voice was not as smootha as Sutherland, Domingo did not have enough chance to show his trick in act one, I would comment later. Incidentally, I also have Sutherland's earlier version, Callas' version with Giulini and Gheorghiu's version with Solti on DVD, it seems that I will have a busy week. ![]()

[#4003] La Traviata Last night, listened to ActII and III of La Traviata by Carlo Kleiber and Cotrubas. Cotrubas was a miserable and vulnerable Violetta, she sang with tears in the 2 nd and third act. Domingo sang with a ringing compassionate voice, but La Traviata is a opera for soprano, tenor usually act as a supporting cast only. Carlos Kleiber once again conducted with a energetic dramatic manner. Recording by DG was vivid, with wonderful 3D sound stage, a treasurable set of Traviata ![]()

"Nulla") http://www.amazon.com/Verdi-Traviata-Cotrubas-Bayerisches-Staatsorchester/dp/B000001G5W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208446464&sr=1-1 |

[#4006] mozart Listened to Mozart violin concerto 5 K219 by Zukerman with Barenboim at the podium directing the ECO. This Columbia was made when Zukerman was 22 and Barenboim 28. Despite his young age Zukerman took a rather reticent approach and his style a model of cultivation, however for this piece I would like a more lively and freer playing such as that by Mutter when she was 14. But you would not find fault with his technique nor his violin tone which was robust and sweet. Of the few versions that I listened lately,Sneiderhan,Szyring,Mutter, I still prefer Milstein with his natural approach, aristocratic style and pure tone, that is hard to resist.

[#4009] Strauss Any doubt as to Karajan's excellence as a STRAUSS conductor can be dispelled by listening to Karajan's work with the VPO. It has been a long time since I listened to TILLEULENSPIEGEL. It just doesn't work on small speakers like LS3/5a or big speakers that are slow. However, this morning playing this through a LONDON LP just shocked me out of my chair, big and bold, so much energy, what magnificence! It's not Strauss if it doesn't sound that way! Death and Transfiguration is superb too!
