[#4049] Any classical fans here? I personally don't like the Angerich's Rach 3 very much. No doubt she was very fast but Rach 3 is a concerto, not sonata. I guess the orchestra was tried too hard to cope with her. Also, Rach 3 has more ingredient besides the speed. I remember one pianist said that the most difficult part of Rach 3 is the several notes at the beginning in the first movement. Can't agree more than that. Don't misundertand that I said Angerich is not good. I have many her records. Her Chopin has exceptional taste that I have very strong impression.

[#4050] Symphonie Espagnole About Symphonie espagnole by Lalo; some recordings like Heifetz (RCA - Gold Seal GD87709) has only 4 movements instead of 5. I find the following from a record sleeve today: 'As this title implies, Lalo first gave his work the four-movement pattern of a symphony - here Allergo non troppo, Scherzando, Andante and rondo - but before the first performance (on Feb 7, 1875), and at Saraste's request, he inserted an Intermezzo on a habanera rhythm between the Scherzando and the Andante. Today the work is played either in five movements or in its inital form.'

[#4051] Last studio recording of a Wagner opera From "The Economist" August 6th, 2005: Monumental is the right word for EMI Classics’ new recording of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde", Plácido Domingo, at the distinctly mature age of 64, is singing the title role for the first time in his career, and he has done it just in time. For this is likely to be the last new studio recording of a Wagner opera, or any other opera on that scale ... Many opera-lovers who used to buy CDs now prefer to watch and listen to a DVD of a live performance ... Opera on DVD now sells more than CDs or video. Since it is a visual experience, collectors are willing to sacrifice perfect sound and the cast of star singers, even in small parts, that are the rule on CDs. Co-productions with broadcasters or opera houses can produce DVDs of live performances for around 100,000 pounds, or one-fifth of the cost of a major studio recording. Only EMI and Universal retain a fragile commitment to studio recording, but Mr Lap [VP of EMI Classics] talks only in terms of significantly cheaper recordings of shorter works by Verdi and Puccini. "We will continue to make one or two a year," he says. But no more Wagner. ----- Some of my favourite Domingo CDs: ![]()

[#4052] Last studio recording of a Wagner opera WAGNER: Tristan und Isolde Placido Domingo, Nina Stemme et al. / Chorus & Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden / Antonio Pappano EMI 7243 5 58006 2 6 Released August 2005 From EMI's site: "This 4-CD set comprises the full opera on 3 CDs and a special bonus DVD disc containing the complete music in DTS 5.1 surround sound and Dolby Digital Stereo, to be played on a DVD machine. The listener is able to select and hear different scenes of the opera with the full effect of 5.1 surround sound and view the full libretti on screen in English, French and German, all via the DVD menu." A good idea for a studio recording of an opera, isn't it?
