[#4010] Strauss

My Blueback LP cover is different, but teh same performances can be found in an old LEGENDS CD, and more recently in Decca's worthwhile Karajan commenmorative set.

[#4011] Sutherland's Violetta
After listened to the wonderful set by Carlos Kleiber and Cotrubas, I listened to Excepts from Sutherland earlier set of Traviata recorded in 1962 with Bergonzi, Merril and Sir John Pritchard on the podium.

Compare with Carlo Kleiber, I immediately noticed the importance of having a good conductor in a opera. Sir John Pritchard played even note right, but he missed the most important element in opera, that is `Drama', despite the demonstrative grade recording by Decca, every scene sound boring when compare with Carlo Kleiber's version.

Sutherland was one of the greatest soprano in last century, her voice was most beautiful I have ever heard of and every high note sound effortless and sweet, but her acting of Violetta once again lack character and passion even compare with Cotrubas, I remember how miserable Violetta was in act 3 when I listened to Cotrubas's version but I remember how wonderful Sutherland's singing was after I listened to this version.

Bergonzi was also one of the greatest italian singer, his voice was the best example of Bel Canto, his singing was smooth and sunny as expected, I am sure Domingo's acting was much better, despite having a voice with a drak tone.

Merrill's singing was kind and authoritative, suited the role of Alfredo's father well, the faomous aria `Di Provence' was most moving, I really don't like the singing of Sherrill Milnes (Father of Alfredo in Kleiber's set) whose sound like crying on everything his sing.

All in all, a very consistently Bel canto set of opera, don't expect drama and excitement, but you can have a Traviata sing but the most beautiful voice of the last century.

[#4013] Strauss

Attended HKPO concerto last Sat. wieh Akiko Suwanai playing Mozart violin concerto 5 and Lawrence Renes as guest conductor. Two things stood out that made this concert worth listening. First the exceptional beauty of Ms Akiko,a rarity in the musical world. Her elegant style and the way she fondle the violin made her a joy to watch. Second her violin tone was so sweet and rich with harmonics. Not surprising as she was playing the Strad that was used by Heifetz, the famoun 1714'Dolphin'. It would be perfect if only she could play like Heifetz. Her playing, though fluent, was overly subdued, reminding me of the Audio Note gears. Her playing could be more energetic and incisive. In the final movement, she lacked a bit of that 'Turkish' feel.
The second part of the programme was Strauss Ein Heldenleben,a big difficult piece. HKPO did not start well, sounding chaotic in the beginning, and the orchestra seemed to lack behind the conductor. But things improved considerably in the later part of the score. Special mention must be to the guest concertmaster,Vesko Eschkenazy, whose playing saved the day. His technique was solid, his tone robust and he played with passion and delicacy. The violin he used is Guarneri del Gesu 1738. So a Strad and Guarneri all in one section, with artists of exceptional beauty and talent, what more do you expect?

What kh33 is saying is physical beauty gives one a head start.

kh33 probably heard the wrong Audio Note combo's. There are people driving difficult speakers with low powered amp, and that's not a marriage in heaven. However, Elephant did demonstrate well a 300B AN amp driving WB Act 1 beautifully.

If kh33 hears AN gears drive Klipsch, he will realize it is his Tenor amp that sounds soft with Watt (once you turn the supertweeter and Watchdog off theree shall be nothing)

海飛茲小提琴演奏

海飛茲 Jascha Heifetz

[#4016] Klemperer's Wagner
Listened to Klemperer's recording of Wagner overture last night, Klemperer take these overture with a borad and grant tempo, his approach make the music sounded majestic. Although the recording in 1960S showed it ages, the performance was the yardstick by which all newcomers are measured.

[#4017] Klemperer's Wagner
Another Wagner specialist is Hans Knappersbusch. Listened to his Wagner overture and prelude last week, including Tristan and Isode and Parsifal. His tempo, like Klemperer, is broad and expansive, with tension and drama build up gradually until the climax, which sometime is mesmerising. The recording sound, produced by Westminster, is amazing though recorded in the late fifties.

[#4018] Klemperer's Wagner

Knappertsbusch is indeed in a class of his own. Whether one likes him or not, for his interpretation, "sloppiness" or use of corrupt editions, he's ceratinly often surprising!

Klemperer always has Gravitas. Sometimes too much. Those who find him heavy gravitate to BPO/Karajan (EMI), NPO/LPOLSO/Boult (EMI) and Cleveland/Szell (CBS) for the Wagner orchestral favorites.

It's amazing for many years EMI has 3 competing versions in their own catalogue! Boult is the real sleeper here (for people today, not those who listened to these in the 70's) and I think he too had the best sound.

早晨...

同意doctorjohn所言,boult七十年代EMI的華格納係演錄俱佳。其中Parsifal相當精采。

[#4021] Shostakovich: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
Purchased this classic recording 2 days ago and just loaded it to my iPod. This will be my companion on long journeys to office for a few days to come. Just sampled

Has anybody watched the documentary about Rostropovich and Vishnevskaya during the Film Festival? As portrayed in the film, these are two really special people!

[#4023] Shostakovich: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
Sorry for the 3rd message on this piece. I should have organized my writing better...

As some of you might already know, next year the Arts Festival is presenting this opera!!!!!! Me and my friends are all already very excited!!!!!! We are still speculating about which house is bringing this opera to us, and will keep you posted.

This is so MARVELLOUS!!! As we don't want endless La Traviata, Rigoletto and Carmen.

Brother Kei,

Is Shostakovich's opera difficult for a opera beginner?

Hi CKM

I'm as new to this opera as you, having only heard this opera once or twice without following the libretto in detail. But I guess it's not hard for us newbies.

Btw, the Rostropovich version is much more brilliant than that by Myung-Whun Chung (see below)! Too bad I cannot listen to it with my libretto in office...

[#4026] French Orchestral piece
Finally got a copy of Dukas Sorceror's Apprentice, a enjoyable short piece frequently heard in cartoon's. I am not too familiar with this piece so I cannot comment on performance, but I doubt whether it could be included in the 100 greatest master piece in classical music.

[#4030] ARG note on Backhaus

"...He could play any piece in any key you might name, transposing as he played. On one occasion, rehearsing the Grieg concerto in A minor, the piano was found to be half tone flat. refusing an offer to obtain a properly tuned instrument, he merely finished the rehersal by playing the piece in B-flat minor, a half tone higher.” (McKelvey)
