[#4103] Japanese plays Bartok Hi gs and ALL, At the risk of degrading his pianism, I have to say that one's appreciation of Horowitz is incomplete if one has not seen him in action. His showmanship is an essential part of his art. A comparison of Rubinstein and Horowitz would illustrate this point. "In his autobiography, Rubinstein admitted that Horowitz was the better pianist, but he consoled himself with the belief that he was the better musician. Both pianists invariably played to sold-out houses. The Rubinstein audience came expecting to be enveloped with a genial presence and a bath of warm tone. Rubinstein concerts were comforting. Horowitz concerts, on the other hand, were demonic ... There was a feeling of electricity in the hall that Rubinstein never evoked. Horowitz almost scared people. His entrances and exits were genial enough, but while he was at work there was a feeling of high voltage in the auditorium, ... (Harold C Schonberg, The Great Pianists, pp. 433-434) GS, I don't have the CD from DG that you have, but I have this DVD which I think was filmed on the same occasion. Horowitz in Moscow Vladimir Horowitz [1986] Pioneer Classics PC-94-021-D Released 2000 There are a lot of drama and excitement in this recital. The moment when Schumann's Traumerei, in Horowitz's hands, moved a girl in the audience into tears is unforgettable.

[#4106] Horowitz in Moscow Hi GS, I think I bought it from Percival Records (35 Wing Kut Street, Central). It was about five years ago. It is likely that Pioneer does not own the licence anymore. The ladies at Percival would know. I watched the Traumerei track this morning again. More than one member of the audience could be seen bursting into tears.

[#4110] 2Rs in Music & Arts About a week ago, we talked about the EMI DVD and Philips CDs of the collaboration of Rostropovich and Richter playing Beethoven's cello sonatas at the 1964 Edinburgh Festival (on 31 August). Another recording of this partnership slightly earlier in the same year is equally historic: Brahms's Cello Sonata No. 1 and Grieg's Cello Sonata. It's a live recording from the Aldeburgh Festival (on 20 June). Not many fans of the 2Rs have the good fortunate of owning this Music & Arts CD-283 (made in 1988 in Japan by Denon / Nippon Columbia Co. Ltd). ![]()

[#4111] 2Rs in Music & Arts Indeed all Music & Arts CDs of Richter are rare in the market now. Why? Because the material was not licensed. Richter never authorized any M&A releases. There had been many complaints from legitimate labels such as Chant du Monde, Praga, and Orfeo etc even before Richter and his wife died. The story continued after their death, and the story circulates among members of the Richter e-mail group is somewhat like this: Dorliak and Richter were never actually married (Richter is widely known to be gay), although they behaved as such. After Dorliak's death, her nephew was able to pay off some people in Russia and get them legally "married" (yes, after death!). This act has effectively established him to be the heir (as the only survivor of Dorliak) to all the Richter recordings, and he has taken out an injunction against all the pirate and semi-pirate labels (including Music & Arts) to prevent them from issuing Richter recordings (even recordings that these labels had previously issued). Some years ago, M&A issued this announcement: "At the request of Mr Dimitri D. Dorliak, heir to Richter, we deleted all Richter recordings from our catalog some months ago, though they had been authorized by Richter, who praised several of them highly in his Journals. We do not plan to reissue them." And in answer to inquiries about the possibility of buying Richter CDs from M&A direct, the answer was: "Unfortunately, our Richter catalog has been completely deleted. The titles are no longer being offered anywhere in the world. Thank for your interest." Another label Parnassus has been fighting a heroic battle to overturn the injunction, recently with some successes. This label has so far offered us with 8 CDs in the "Sviatoslav Richter in the 1950s" series.

[#4113] Friedman gold CD Hi kan, ocean, and ALL, The young lady at Percival Records told me this afternoon that as recent as early last year, "gold" CDs of Friedman's "Violin Showpieces" were still available at her shop. Apparently, a year is a long time in this case. Time, tide, and good CD wait for no man.
