[#4149] Horowitz in Moscow (Sony) Hi trollope, Thanks for your further information on the DVD. Recently no time to visit CD shop due to the tons of work. Indeed, need to go for a biz trip tomorrow. Try to find some spare time on the coming long weekend.

[#4151] Horowitz in Moscow I suspect that the audio tracks of the recently released (this April) Sony DVD are in PCM Stereo only. Yet I don't think he absence of the DD5.1 is a handicap of great import. I always prefer the PCM stereo with my Pioneer DVD, as the DD5.1 is unnatural, esp in the Steinway bass. In terms of sound quality, the 1990-released DG audio CD prevails.

[#4153] Brahms's cello sonatas On the 29th of last month I mentioned (and posted a photo of) a Music & Arts CD of Rostropovich and Richter playing Brahms's No. 1 Cello Sonata. Now that it's about time to return this CD to the library, I listened to it the third time earlier this evening and I don't the partnership of the 2Rs at the 1964 Aldeburgh Festival a harmonious one. The cello dominates most of the scene and the piano is often out of breath. Richter is seldom in the limelight. In fact the piano is not intended as an accompanist voice, as Brahms entitles his cello sonatas "sonatas for piano and violincello". The two instruments should be equal. On 26 May 1976, Richter listened to an LP (Parnassus? Discocorp?) of this 20 June 1964 recording, and he commented, “I don't like the recording, which was made at Aldeburgh, and find it really rather unsuccessful. Slava was so afraid that I'd drown him (!) that he managed to talk me into lowering the piano lid. The result is a frightful imbalance and, at the same time, there's a general impression of over-cautiousness and unharmoniousness and, ultimately, of total failure. An execrable recording." Richter never played these cello sonatas again.

[#4154] Brahms's cello sonatas It is a sad story that the 2Rs who had been great friends and had spoken a common musical language in the 1950s began to drift apart in the 1960s. They played a much more successful Brahms cello sonata in late 1950s. It was a live recording of Brahms's Second Cello Sonata. The only commercially available recording is from Yedang (YCC-0079, released 2002). The first movement is not tidy enough (not helped by audience noise of all kinds), but there are still moments of immense vitality, and the players are really in unison. In the 2nd movement, things begin to breathe and the players are singing in sonorous eloquence -- in technicoloured terms despite the mono sound. The generous use of pizzicato, to borrow a cliche, tugs at our heartstrings, melting us down to the point of physical collapse. Overall, the 1959 recorded sound leaves a lot to be desired (despite the advertised 96/24 treatment), but the sense of occasion is a sheer joy. Fans of Rostropovish or Richter or both will want this Yedang CD in their collection. The experience has left me feeling reverential for the genius in the music. Brahms's chamber works are among the most intimate of musical compositions.

[#4155] Brahms's cello sonatas Recently I have also listened to some other versions of Brahms's cello sonatas. Allow me to share with you my very brief comments, then I have to go to bed. (1) Yo-Yo Ma & Emanuel Ax (r. 1991) from Sony (SK 48191) A delicate and refined reading, a shade too fine-grained 纖弱. Have to turn up the volume a bit. (2) Yo-Yo Ma & Emanuel Ax (r. 1985) from RCA (Artistes Repertoires 74321 845 982) Unbuttoned, and very eloquent (as a surprise particularly from the piano). Recorded sound in no way inferior to their later Sony CD. (3) Jacqueline du Pré & Daniel Barenboim (r. 1968) from EMI (5 57293 2) Mono sound lacking in clarity. Du Pré dominates with unflagging, often violent, enthusiasm. Breathtaking. Too romantic to be true? Well, beauty is truth. (My gratitude to Tanuski for this recommendation.) (4) Mstislav Rostropovish & Rudolf Serkin (r. 1983?) from DG (410 510-2) Good communication between the partners. Very satisfying in every respect one can think of. Overall there is a relaxed yet captivating mood: hallmark of two masters in their season of mellow fruitfulness. They play the longest "adagio affettuoso" but the assurance of their phrasing is never in doubt. I strongly recommend it. ![]()
