[#4218] Kovacevich's B3+B4 piano concertos Can you do me a favour of checking in what years were these two pieces recorded? As my Philips (Virtuoso) CD only offer this piece of information, which may or may not be the years when they were recorded. ![]()

[#4220] Kovacevich's B3+B4 piano concertos In the spirit of Clio, I have made a habit of putting in the year of recording of a work in my CD catalogue. You will do me a great service of ascertaining those two figures. Thanks, Eric.

[#4221] Kovacevich's B3+B4 piano concertos Hi Trollope, My Kovacevich's Philips Piano Concerto No.2 Op.19 & 4 Op.58 is again a LP from ebay. There is no recording information but Circled P 1975 printed on both sides of the record label and stamped on the vinyl. I always assume P is the recording date, and C is the issue date. I maybe wrong and would like to know what these sign exactly mean. In the meantime, I'm searching for Beethoven No. 1,3,5 played by Kovacevich and the rest of Mozart Piano Concerto played by Perahia as I already get a few. Just (finally) receive the 8 records (4 sealed) shipped from US in mid-July. Listen to 1st movement of Brahms violin concerto (Accordo/Massur/Gewandhaus Orch, Leipzig - 1979 Philips), it is a bit slow. For Brahms, I still prefer the ones by Mutter and Stern.

[#4223] Mind your P & C Hi Eric, The mystic encircled "P" & "C": one of which should be, I assume, the year of the recording's first release; but none, I am quite sure, indicates the recording date. The DG LP of Mozart + Reinecke you mentioned two days ago has been re-issued in DG's "The Originals", coupled with Rodrigo's Concierto serenata (463 648-2). I will probably buy it.

[#4224] Kovacevich + Sir Colin Hi Eric, if you fail to find them in LP format, you may wish to lower your standard to put up with the Duo series issues, although they must taste like 美沙硐 to you as compared to the refined taste of the real thing.

[#4225] Kovacevich + Sir Colin Hi Trollope, Yes, yesterday, I learnt from amazon that 2 Philips Duos "Beethoven: Complete Concertos, Vol.1 & 2" give a complete set of Kovacevich Beethoven Piano Concerto plus violin concerto ..etc. I guess the No.5 is the same as the one you acquired in England. Infact I find those recently recorded (or re-issued) CDs sound very good. DG's "The Originals" (463 648-2) has the same cover & music (plus RODRIGO) as the Mozart I've mentioned. Without the CD code, I failed to find you a picture from internet two days ago. Below is a review: http://www.classicstoday.com/review.asp?ReviewNum=3952 ![]()

| [#4233] Mozart Piano Sonata Listen to Mozart piano sonata in C K545 played by Andras Schiff (L'Oiseau-Lyre label), performed on Mozart's own piano, in the room where he was born. Fortepiano does not sound like harpischord. It uses hammer to strike the string while harpischord is plucking the string The tone of the fortepiano is quite different from that of the modern piano, being softer, lighter, quieter with less sustain. Tone quality is not uniform throughout the range from lower octave to upper octave. Dynamic range of the modern piano is greater. | [#4234] Fortepiano Hi Eric, [1] Kennedy's Elgar Violin Concerto: I have exactly the same EMI CD. [2] I don't have Schiff's on the fortepiano, in fact I don't know he has recorded one, and on THAT piano. An interesting disc. Is it good? [3] Some of my fortepiano CDs: a) Malcolm Bilson (Mozart) b) Melvyn Tan (Beethoven, Schubert) c) Patrick Cohn (Boccherini) d) Robert Levin (Schubert) Preference probably in that order. |

[#4235] Harpsichordists Mainly, I think, because the harpsichord is more often than not an accompanying instrument, it features, though not always prominently, in a lot of baroque chamber music. In comparison, the fortepiano is friendlier to our ear when played solo. I just gave my CD catalogue a once-over. The list of harpsichordists at my service is a lot longer than I have expected: Robert Aldwinckle (various), Chiyoko Arita 有田千代子 (Bach), Virginia Black (Mozart), Bruno Canino (Vivaldi), John Constabel (Telemann), Alan Cuckston (Handel), Ottavio Dantone (Benedetto Marcello), Richard Egarr (Handel), Christopher Hogwooe (Vivaldi), Christiane Jaccottet (Bach, Zelanka), Nicholas Kraemer (Handel), Wanda Landowska (Couperin, Bach, ...) George Malcolm (Handel), Mitzi Meyerson (Rameau), David Moroney (Bach), Hanne Petri (Corelli, ...) Trevor Pinnock (Bach), Simon Preston (Vivaldi), John Steele Ritter (Rameau), Miklós Spányi (CPE Bach), Andreas Staier (CPE Bach), Blandine Verlet (Scarlatti), Robert Veyron-Lacroix (Handel).

[#4236] Fortepiano Hi Trollope, In Schiff's Mozart recording, the notes played by the left hand sound similar to modern piano but those by the right hand are quite different. Personally, I prefer the dynamic and resonance of modern piano and the elegence of harpischord but not used to the un-sustained and inconsistent tone quality (from the lower to upper register) of fortepiano. When I previously listen to Malcolm Bilson playing Mozart Concerto on Fortepiano (together with the English Baroque soloists on authentic instruments), sonic character of the fortepiano is not so obvious.
