I am interested to see her performance. This young Jap violinist 司紗矢香, should be younger than Midori and Suwanai Akiko. Her webpage:

http://www.sayaka-shoji.com/

Her performance good or not?

By the way 五鳩龍 seems to be Midori's younger brother who has the same surname 五鳩 (Goto).

Just came back from Anne Sophie Mutter's concert, great! Despite the first piece of music from Bartok is unfamiliar to me (and some how tedious), others are familiar to me. Comparing with my favourite Carmignola's version, Mutter is relatively polite. Now I understand that Carmignola is really fasssssst and '狠'especially in summer and winter. Mutter is quite elegant, wearing a black dress with scattered red flowers! She encored 3 times, incl replaying the summer and winter again and she says 'dedicate J S Bach's Air from Suite No 3 to those live........' (Sichuan I guess). Surprisingly there are standing ovations, when the concert finish, another surprise was the long que waiting for autograph. Anyway, an enjoyable evening!

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Tchaikovsky_Competition
Vladimir Ashkenazy and John Ogdon shared the first prize of 1962 International Tchaikovsky Competition where 殷承宗 won the second prize.

This is the only 殷承宗 CD I have.

For Chinese pianist playing Chopin, I would recommend Fou Ts'ong with Muhai Tang conducting the Sinfonia Varsovia under Meridian Records label

[#4195] Kempe/ Tortelier's Don Quixote
After listening to Fournier/Karajan's recording of Don Quixote, listened to Tortelier/Kempe's last night.

Dresden Staatskapelle is one of the best orchestra in the world and have a long tradition of performing Richard Strauss's music, several works was premiered by the ensemble, and Richard Strauss was their conductor in the first half of the 20th century. I think their performance cannot be more authentic when we come to Strauss' music.

Kempe generate a rich and gorgeous tone from Dresden Staatskapelle, and the woodwind from the principal of Dresden Staatskapelle are delicate and sweet, Tortelier's cello was in perfect match with the playing of the orchestra, his playing was lyrical and dignified. But compared with Karajan/Fournier's team, Kempe/Tortelier were too polite, and Tortelier was by no mean as expressive and neurotic as Fournier, Karajan's story telling ability was superior to Kempe.

The recording by Christopher Parker was of demonstrative grade, capture the accoustic of the great hall of Staatskapelle most vividly.

[#4198] Bloch
One piece of music suitable for this weather is Ernst Bloch's Hebrew Rhapsody for cello and orchestra, an intense romantic piece played by Zara Nelsova and the Utah Symphony. Nelsova was considered queen of cellist in the 20th century and her playing of this cello work was most famous with the approval of the composer himself.

[#4199] Bloch
Listened to Final recital by Heifetz last night.

Heifetz was renowned for his playing of the great violin concerto, however he choose to play some violin sonata as his last recital.

But the two violin sonata by Franck, Strauss, and Bach are by no mean simple, the second movement of Franck's violin sonata is a real challenge to violinist as well as pianist. From the very first violin note of Franck's violin sonata, we are assured that Heifetz's silky tone was as smooth as ever, his double stopping was the clean and accurate ( if you hear a double stopping sound like two note playing at the same time, the tone is inaccurate.) His performance of the second movement put Chung/ Lupu into shade. However, Heifetz was the KIng of Violin and the pianist only act as a honest servant, it lack the sense of give and take displayed by Chung and Lupu, despite the dominance of Heifetz on violin, I still found Chung/ Lupu a reference version for this work.

Strauss violin sonata was rarely heard on concert platform, this sonata is another difficult violin sonata. Heifetz showed us that his technique was as good as ever, But once again, those want this sonata to sound like a chamber music should listened to Chung and Zimerman.

[#4200] Bargain Wagner of the Century

This new DECCA megabox release is an amazing value. 33 CDs that is selling at PRO SOUND for $5xx. Yes, <$20@

Despite being issued by "Decca", these are actually old PHILIPS performances recorded all at Bayreuth and in great sound.

--Tristan (Bohm)
--Ring (Bohm)

Just those 2 should be enough reason.

--Meistersinger, Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin, Tannhauser (Sawallisch and Varviso)

--Parsifal (Levine)

I only wish they had included either of Knappertsbusch's Parifal instead. Small quibble.

Synopsis but no libretto.

Grab it at Pro Sound!

[#4201] Schubert - D345
Schubert - Konzertstück for violin & orchestra in D major, D. 345, an early work by Schubert written when he was 19.

The elegant Allegro movement is the music in TVB program "更上一層樓" which someone queries in another thread some months ago.

I've listened to it (played by Gidon Kremer, Chamber Orchestra of Europe) last night via Radio 4 (at ~23:13 to 23:25) and you can revisit it through website below:

[#4204] Verdi requiem by Solti
Solti's version of Verdi requiem was recorded back in 1960s, he leaded a young vocal quartet of Pavorotti/Sutherland/Horne/Talvela(young by then, become legendary now), together with Vienna Philharmonic they form a `dream team'.

If you think that Solti is afiery conductor, I will say yes and no, in `Dies Irae' the result was really exicitng and played with fire, but the other part Solti conducted with heartwarming sensitivity.

The vocal quartet cannot be bettered, Pavorotti was a great tenor and his vocal was open and sunny, his high notes were ringing and effortless, Horne and Talvela have a dark and steady tone. Many criticize Sutherland for inappropriate treatment of her role, but I found her stunning and her Libera me was the best I have heard of. ( but I have limited experience only.)

Recording by Gordon Parry was excellent for its ages, demonstrative grade even by todays standard. I can hear the vibration of the skin of big drum `Dies Irae' clearly. All in all,
a great disc that combine viceral orchestral excitment, lyrical singing and demonstrative recording, this will be my definitive version out of my three version.(other two by Abbado(2000), Fricsay(1960 live version).

[#4205] Emanuel Ax
Listened to Emanuel Ax and HKPO playing Chopin 2nd piano concerto last Sat. and was not impressed. Sure he had technique and articulation, but his phrasing was ordinary and he did not has the flair and poetic artistry that i expected from playing Chopin. He was not helped by the orchestra either.Instead of supporting and collaborating, the orchestra seemed to play against the soloist.
The 2nd part of the programme was Schoenberg's transcription of Brahms' piano quartet in G. Playing by HKPO was better but still coarse and uninspiring.

[#4206] Lazar Berman's Schubert final sonata
Here is a recording of Lazar Berman's Schubert B flat major Sonata not listed in the Berman discography compiled by Björn Östlund.

http://home.swipnet.se/bjorn_ostlund/berman.htm

A 1972 authorized edition has just been released with the consensus of the Berman family. It was remastered in January by Danilo Prefumo, who also wrote the liner notes.

The sound emerges freshly on this CD. There is also freshness and a great deal of affectionate finesse to recommend this live performance in Milan.

This Istituto Discografico Italiano 2008 release will probably turn out to be the most important Berman CD of the year.

[#4209] Respighi 's Pine of Rome
Listen to two orchestral tone poem by Respighi last night, namely the pine of Rome and Rome Festival.

Respighi's music vividly protray the scene in Rome, and every movement have a title. Lorin Maazel lead the Cleveland orchestra laid down one of the most exiciting and colorful account on record. After Szell's training, Cleveland orchestra can master any piece of music brilliantly, however difficult they are, including this one

But most amazing is the recording by Kenneth Wilkinson, the sound is sharply focus and trueful, no wonder it was listed as one of TAS super disc.

After recommended by chowhwk, this disc goes out of print, but fortunately one copy is available in Hong Kong central library, those who want to have a listen can book now. Thanks chowhwk for recommending this piece, quote his commend again:
Respighi Pines of Rome - Lorin Maazel/Cleveland Symphony Orchestra

Tour De France.

Pines of the Appian Way

High Decibel, Bass Drum
