[#4367] Symphonies of Wind Instruments Stravinsky, when commenting his "Symphonies of Wind Instruments", said in his autobiography "'Symphonies' in this case meaning instruments sounded together, not an orchestral symphony in the traditional sense. It lacks all those elements that infallibly appeal to the ordinary listener, or to which he is accustomed. It is futile to look in it for passionate impulse or dynamic brilliance. The music is not meant to 'please' an audience, nor to arouse its passions. Nevertheless I had hoped that it would appeal to some of those persons in whom a purely musical receptivity outweighed the desire to satisfy their sentimental cravings". A laudable statement which should edify those who take romanticism in music as its only nature. ![]()

[#4368] The Rite of Spring I tried to run through different versions of the Firebird and invariably every time I came back to the Rite of Spring. It is hard for me to imagine how shocked the audience was when it was premiered. The opening night of the Rite of Spring was one of the most riotous in modern music history, a rock concert gone wild with people hooting, screaming, hissing, and slapping one another. They heard completely different sounding sounds. Even after nearly a century of listening when the different sounds become relatively familiar, I was still shocked every time as if I was listening to it for the first time, especially when my ears had been pre-tuned to the rhythms of the BBB. It is not surprising to note what the music critics wrote in the Boston Herald when the Rite of Spring was first performed : Who wrote this fiendish "Rite of Spring" What right had he to write the thing, Against our helpless ears to fling Its crash, clash, cling, clang, bing, bang, bing? And then to call it "Rite of Spring" The season when on joyous wing The birds harmonious carols sing And harmony's in everything! He who could write the "Rite of Spring" If I be right, by right should swing!

[#4373] ESL A few Form 6 students from Tin Shui Wai visited me this morning. Instead of listening to my boring homily, they were more interested in the electrostatic speakers and took more pictures than gingers and rcwy did. They even took notes on my lecture of the construction and operating mechanism of the ESL. Perhaps I should target and breed them as the next generation ESL fans.

[#4375] ESL Did you lecture them about your EICO pre-amps as well? ______________________________________________________________ rcwy, I have to leave that to you. I'm no EICO professor. I'm afraid what I would say will be ................mmm, these EICO preamps are very good but soundwise and constructionwise, you really have to take a look at this German V72....................... May be if the 27M is still in place, I would introduce that to them.

[#4381] ESL Dr King, See you Monday. I am also serious about your DIY cable. After extensive listening, I still much prefer your 1G (first generation) to 2G (second generation). The 2G sounds slightly laid back whilst the 1G gives a much more natural and boarder sound stage. Now I am seriously compare your 1G with my KCAG. Very close.
