| [#4402] The transitory quality of youth ... Let me contribute a few pictures on the current topic of musicians touched by age. During the early years of CD as a sound carrier, Philips released, in 1985, two Brahms solo piano discs played by Stephen Bishop Kovacevich: 411 103-2 and 411 137-2. Both of them are well-played and well-recorded. The 1992 edition of the Penguin Guide says that they "can receive the strongest recommendation". The two discs have been reissued, curiously separately, in two pairs of Philips DUO. And the DUO that contains the Scherzo, the 4 Ballades, and the 8 Piano Pieces seems to have been withdrawn. ![]() |

| [#4407] The transitory quality of youth ... Some brief notes and comments: [1] The Beethoven piano concerto cycle partnered with Sir Colin Davis is generally to be preferred to his attempts with the Australians. [2] Listen to his Beethoven piano sonatas on Philips made in the 1970s and I don't think his more recent EMI accounts (1992-2003) can displace them. "Greatest Pianists of the 20th Century" Vol. 60 Stephen Kovacevich I Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos. 8 "Pathetique", 17 "Tempest", 18 "Hunt", 28, 30, 31, & 32 [r. 1971-1978] [3] The other pair of CDs in the "Greatest Pianists of the 20th Century" (Vol. 61) are helpful remainder of Kovacevich's achievements in his prime. Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 5 [r.1970] Chopin: Nocturnes Nos. 17 & 18 / Impromptu No. 3 [r.1972] Brahms: 4 Piano Pieces [r. 1983] Bartok: Out of Doors / Sonatina [r.1969] / Piano Concerto No. 2* [r.1968] Stravinsky: Concerto for Piano and Wind Instruments* [r.1969] Richard Rodney Bennett: Piano Concerto No. 1** [r.1971] *BBC Sym Orch / Sir Colin Davis **BBC Sym Orch / Alexander Gibson [4] Avoid his EMI Schubert No. 21 recorded in 1994. The piano is set a distance in a reverberant acoustic, blurring the edges, as with some of his discs in the Beethoven sonata cycle. It is mystery to me that EMI has the nerve to re-issue it in its "Great Recordings of the Century" series. [5] His Grieg and Schumann concertos are classics, and deservedly. [6] The two "Concert Classics" CDs of Beethoven's Bagatelles and Diabelli Variations are also not to be missed. [7] Disc 1, Vol. 14 of Philips's "Complete Mozart Edition" contains the Trio for Piano, Clarinet, and Viola, K.498 recorded in 1969, with Jack Brymer (clarinet) and Patrick Ireland (viola). [8] The two Beethoven cello sonatas made with Du Pré are memorable recordings I often return to. |

| [#4408] The Song of the Earth ... I picked up Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde this evening. It's the celebrated Bruno Walter-WPO 1952 version with the beautifully dark-voiced Ferrier and the 'more romantic than heroic' Patzak singing the solo parts. Mahler's Song on mono adds to the music a general nostalgic darkness and fills me with reveries of my recent personal history and of my present that will also become history. The 'chemistry' resulting from Chinese poetry (translated into the German) and Austro-German music is so inexplicably strange ... And with the diminishing of the last note of the repeated word 'ewig' - which, to me, is in utterly ironic contrast with the 'for ever and ever' in the 'Allelujah' chorus of Messiah, never have I felt so strongly the helplessness in life and that my young pride has gone. Is that the power of music? ![]() |

| [#4412] The transitory quality of youth ... A Beethoven Piano night. 1. Piano Concerto No.3 Wilhelm Backahus, Wiener Philharmoniker / Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt 2. Moonlight Sonata Wilhelm Backahus 3. Pathetique Sonata Stephen Bishop Sound of the 1958 Backahus Beethoven recording is superb. I think the Piano Concert No,3 is available in this CD Set. | [#4416] Book review Recently I finished the book "What to Listen for in music" by Aaron Copland. He was a famous American composer at first half of 19th century. His book illustrates elementary music theory with examples to share how we can enjoy more and what should we listen in music. I understand much more why musician doesn't need HiFi to appreicate the music and the foundation that I lack before. I will re-read the book several times slowly and listen to the examples quoted, in relation to different music elements and forms discussed. I think this book can benefit other amateurs like me. ![]() |
