WE109A is a very good choke with distinctive WE sound character, but does it worth the high price?( I bought 3x WE109A about 10+ years ago in ebay, its about $350 per piece). WE71A is a cheaper alternative or even the cheap cheap WE221H sounds very nice if it is used in the right circuit and matched with the right caps.

Please tell me what volume pot are you using in your WE44A preamp. I'm using 2 Daven, 1 db and 2 db per channel. I find the 1 db Daven pot exceedingly bright, now I use only the 2 db pot and the power amp volume control to fine-tune the overall volume, its much better now.

I use a Daven T-330-G 600/600 (1.5db/step; 30 steps; total 45 db) after the 185A output transformer. Since then I’ve experienced number of problems on excess amplification distortion due to high output from my CD player. I had tried quite a few things to tackle this problem, which include adding addition pot before and after the Daven T-330-G, as well as at the 44A input stage. The conclusion is no matter what value of pot added before and after the Daven T-330-G don’t work on my system. Until a month ago I put a 250K pot on the input stage (before the 264C input) I was so happy the excess amplification distortion resolved with absolutely no impact on the frequency spectrum or distortion whatsoever, in turn I see about 5-8% overall sonic and musical enhancement. I have also tried 100K but 250K still sound the best. Mr Wu told me never put a volume/pot in the front of a triode pre-amp; microphone effect may occur, but it doesn’t happen on my case. Again this work on my case but it doesn’t necessary work on all cases due to different characteristic of the system components (CD player, power-amp, etc…). I hope this help.

I just add a new member to my system, but I am still waiting for Mr Wu to send me the transformer/chassis kit therefore I can start to build the phone amp for this gorgeous. Setting up this turntable, arm and finding matching cartridge is a months project considering there are so many valuables on each components.

Lowther Hing, These are some of the cartridges I've collected over the years. I will start with MM and I know eventually MC may be my final choice. I know Ortofon SPU match very well with 3012. Have fun.
