Hi Wal,

This is my only Das Lied von der Erde (DG 413 459-2).

Not as powerful as yours I should think, but very lyrical (particularly in the second song from Fassbaender) and with the beautiful contribution from the BPO, there is no lack of moving moments.

Bear in mind the effect of catharsis, my dear friend.

May be, I am not sure. But should have only maximum one or two even if I do have any. The NZ pressing is quite Decca style. I think it is similar to the UK pressing Philips.

Just bought 2 new EMI re-issue records.
One is Kreisler, most song made at 1930 & 1938. But the sound quality is good.
Another is Karajan's Sibelius - Finlandia, Tapiola, The swan of Tuonela...又出血。
But I can't get the "The Soul of Violin" from ABC, and it is said that there is a copyright issue. What a pity!!!

Thank you. But 'catharsis' seems a difficult exercise.
I don't have the Giulini set but his conducting of works for solo voices/ choral and orchestra should be worth trying. I have his German Requiem on DG Original Masters and Faure's Requiem on DG Entree. And I am patiently waiting for a cheap reissue of his Rossini Stabat Mater.

Since I have got the second Bruno Walter Das Lied on Sony, which also 'stars' the great Haefliger. I hesitated to buy the Jochum set on DG Originals.
Have you heard both of them? If so, any comments...?

[#4436] Kovacevich's Brahms piano concertos on EMI
Hi BilDub,

Since your invitation for comments on the Kovacevich's Brahms piano concertos on EMI remains unanswered, let me try to offer you a bit of my mind.

These accounts are gloriously recorded. The high praise they receive from, among others, the Gramophone and the Penguin Guide, is justified. The performance takes great care to attend to details, with no sacrifice in terms of spirited vigour, thanks much to the full-bodied sound (r. 1991 & 1993).

Yet I doubt whether this set is THE one to invest in, if only one set is allowed in our collection. I have conducted a blind test between the Kovacevich and the Gilels on DG's "The Originals" (Jochum / BPO / 1972). The Gilels must take precedence. The sense of momentum is tremendous and the lyrical flow is quite simply irresistible. In short, it has the very quintessence of grace and beauty: 氣度恢宏卓犖磅4, and the sound, despite the passage of time of more than two decades in difference, is not significantly inferior to Kovacevich's. Indeed sometimes it is firmer than the more recent EMI and suits both the soloist and the orchestra, and allow me to say the composer too, very well.

You may also want to explore Kovacevich's earlier accounts with Sir Colin Davis and the LSO (Philips Duo). Our friend lym posted the LP cover here two days ago. I don't have this Duo, but its couplings of the Scherzo, op. 4, Four Ballades, op. 10, and Eight Pieces, op. 76 (originally issued as 411 103-2, the CD cover of which I posted here three days ago) are some of the best Brahms solo piano renditions I have ever heard.

I suspect Kovacevich's Philips Duo has been withdrawn, and his EMI "double forte" set is not widely available either. I wish you luck.
