I have not listened to Bishop's version but I think the overall structure, mood and stage of the Brahms should favor Gilels.

[#4442] 回覆(40):ESSENTIAL YO-YO MA
HI Pumbaa,

Listening some of the sample from HMX, I dont think this is a good choice among Ma's collection,
I will choose a complete performance rather than a Mix CD.
(I perfer to one concept CD)

2-Disc set includes 35 of Yo-Yo Ma's greatest masterpieces ranging from The Swan from "Carnival of the Animals", Cristal, Gabriel's Oboe and even the epic The Eternal Vow from "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"....from ma's website.

Thanks Trollope. Your wordings remind me of the interesting story of _Rumpole's Last Case_.

I think I'll go for Gilels because, yes you are correct, there should be extra luck, which I lack, unfortunately, to find Kovacevich's Double Forte.

My only Gilels is the beautifully and subtly conducted (by Bohm) Mozart PC KV595/ Double Concerto KV365 + Schubert Fantasy in Fm on DG's Originals. From his performance I believe I won't be disappointed by his playing Brahms PCs.

For me, it's always very important to have a good control while at the same time, paradoxically, an internalised passion when playing Brahms. That's why amongst various renowned Brahms Symphony No.4 renditions I like Kleiber's most (who is my all-time favourite). Listening to the first few notes, 我聽得如履薄冰, 猶如捧著一顆脆弱的心, 輕輕的, 唯恐把它摔壞了. The same feeling as in the mood of love...

And my love to Brahms is endless.

Hi BilDub,

I am sure there are many musical rewards awaiting you in your investment in Gilels.

I don't have the Gilels CD (DG's "The Originals") you mentioned, but since I have the complete set of Philips's "Great Pianists", his Mozart KV 595 and Schubert F minor Fantasy are in my possession. My impression? Sorry, not even a memory now. Life is too short for art. Now that you have mentioned these recordings, I will put them in my mental playlist.

Kleiber's magic is infinite. He is in my book of nice names for Brahms, more so, perhaps, than for Beethoven.

Dear old Rumpole, the irrepressible barrister at law. I saw quite a lot of the Rumpole cases on TV many years ago, but I don't remember having read any Rumpole books. If you are interested in Rumpole, you may find his creator John Mortimer equally, if not more, interesting. I would recommend his autobiographies.

[#4448] Brahms expert(s)
Long ago I had been namelessly fond of the Third Symphony - before I came to know the Fourth. The Third is generally melancholic and that is quite apparent. But the interplay between instruments in the Fourth is superb. To bring a sensible and striking transition from the third to the fourth movement takes the unique sensitivity and spontaneity of a conductor.

C. Kleiber is compared to such great names as Furtwangler and Toscanini (plus Boult and Karajan, too) in the album booklet of DG 'The Originals'; he certainly earns the praise for the highly eloquent lyricism.

However, I have recently got the chance to listen to the Hungarian conductor Istvan Kertesz, whom I think has been considered chiefly as only a Dvorak expert, and I have to recommend his renditions of the Brahms cycle. Not only is the sound of each instrument section brought out prominently with good measure, the speed is also maintained to an optimal level so that a truthfulness is revealed - this is something that I do not find in Boult, Karajan, or even Walter.

Mr Kertesz should be well-remembered as a major Brahmsian.

(It seems they are only available only on Japanese Decca edition now.)

[#4451] Kertesz
Hi Wal,

I don't even have Kertisz's Dvorak. My only CD of the Hungarian conductor is:

Respighi: Pines of Rome / Fountains of Rome / The Birds
London Symphony Orchestra / István Kertész [1969?]
Decca (Weekend Classics) 425 507-2: AAD 1989

Wonderfully vivid sound. It costed me slightly less than $50 in 1991, but I think it should fetch a lot more in the second-hand market now. It is this thing that has made even Reiner's famous Chicago Sym Orch version unnecessary in my collection.

Thanks for recommending the conductor's Brahms. I will bear that in mind.

Hi Trazom,

Regarding the sound quality of the Kreisler plays Kreisler, as it was recorded in 1930 & 1938, it is Mono recording. (every recordings before 1957 is Mono). But anyway the sound is OK, no special D...D.. defeats, very good.

Hi Trazom,

Regarding the Kreisler record, the first time I turned the vol to 7 o'clock in order not to disturb my boss, and I didn't notice any abnormal noise. But tonight as my boss is not at home, I turn the vol to 9 o'clock, I did find small "S...S..." background noise.

Sorry for misleading in last message.

Hi supera,
Thanks for your reply,
Well I understand that since this was a recording of nearly seventy years ago, so some ss..s sound is understandable, but anyway I will take it if I visit a CD shop next time, (since Kreisler's CD is not easy to find, am I right?)

This is to follow-up my comments (05-09-14 01:42) of the two CDs of Brhams's cello sonatas played by Ax and Ma.

The first one is from RCA (recorded 1985).
