[#4482] Klemperer's very dry humour ! Hello trollope, So it seems you are also fond of vocal music. Does the 'An die Musik' collection contain many Lieder? If so, you must be familiar with the 1950s-70s stars like Christa Ludwig, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Hans Hotter and Fritz Wunderlich - all of whom I've heard only in operas or in Mahler. Nicolai Gedda is my top choice for the tenor voice - just listen and you will be amazed. In his autobiography, he shares a mean joke from Otto Klemperer (who was known for his bluntness and irony in his humour): "Otto Klemperer did not like modern composers, other than Gustav Mahler, whose works he often conducted. Klemperer was once in a town in Germany where Paul Hindemith was lecturing on his music, and he went to hear the composer speak. There was discussion afterward and Hindemith, who had talked ardently about his own music, was now keen for the audience to ask questions about modern music in general. Klemperer put up his hand. Hindemith, recognizing him, was flattered. 'It's slendid to see you here, Professor Klemperer. What is it you'd like to ask or add?' Klemperer replied: 'Where's the toilet?'" --- from Nicolai Gedda: My life and Art (Amadeus Press, 1999), p.148.

[#4483] Klemperer's very dry humour ! Good morning Wal, The accompanied DVD in "Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau: An die Musik" contains first release of eight Schubert lieder with Richter (1978). The sound is acceptable mono. This DVD is an important addition to my collection of Fischer-Dieskau + Richter in Schubert's lieder on CD. The other two CDs are: DG (Galleria) and Orfeo. Thanks for reminding me of Nicolai Gedda. I will find sometime next week to dip into these: Mozart: Die Zauberflöte Gundula Janowitz, Nicolai Gedda, Walter Berry, Lucia Popp et al. / Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus / Otto Klemperer [1964] EMI CMS 7 69971 2: ADD 1989 (2 CDs) Bach: St Matthew Passion Peter Pears, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopt, Christa Ludwig, Nicolai Gedda, Walter Berry et al. / Philharmonia Orchestra & Choir / Boys of Hampstead Parish Church Choir / Otto Klemperer [1961] EMI 7 63058 2: ADD 1989 (3 CDs) They have long been some of my most cherished CDs.

[#4486] Martzy's CDs -- a brief survey Hi dvmrp, Johanna Martzy has attained cult status in recent years in Japan and Korea. I am not surprised that her LPs are fervently sought after items. Happily, one does not have to be an LP collector to enjoy her genius. Over the years I have listened to her CDs on: Doremi, Testament, EMI, DG, and of course the most expensive of them all, Coup d'Archet. I confess I own none of them, never been really tempted to make a purchase -- by no means a reflection of my evaluation of her talents (I daren't), but because I have yet to find a budget for her CDs. Her Bach is justly famous, mainly I think because of her warmth and sensitivity. Her Bach sonatas are things of beauty with no added sugar. Her two Handel sonatas are little jewels in my mp3 player. And her Beethoven / Kreisler's Rondino too. Her "Favourite Short Works" on Coup d'Archet is a CD I have borrowed three or four times from the library. http://www.coupdarchet.com/coup006.asp If I were to buy one Martzy, that would likely be her Mendelssohn and Brahms concertos, with Paul Kletzki conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra (Testament). But this CD isn't cheap, so one may instead begin with her Dvorak, Bruch, & Glazunov on DG's "The Originals". Or more ideally, her Bach on EMI, if that inexpensive box-set is still in circulation. There is also a 2-CD Korean EMI set.

[#4487] Martzy's CDs -- a brief survey I beg your pardon. I take back my recommendation of the DG, as Martzy is the soloist of the Dvorak only.

It's great that his technique is marvelous, especially Track 4 - Paganini: Caprice No. 24 (6:01) (Repin/Markovich, Jun 1-4, 1998) Plan to buy this one. Anyone has suggestions http://www.vadimrepin.com/recordings/popup7.html |

[#4490] Fricsay encore Another gem from Fricsay is Don Giovanni (The Origials 463 629-2) - superb recorded sound and expressive singers. My only doubt is the choice of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau for the title role (as with Karl Bohm's 1960s set 429 870-2). What do you brothers think? ![]()
