| [#4539] Julian Bream Another Julian Bream playing Bach. More expressive than the RCA one. For the contrapuntal line in Suite No.1 in E Minor, BWV996: Prelude, I prefer the RCA one. | [#4540] Catharsis Hi trollope, It's nice to know you like this version too. It's also available on Decca Legends, but I guess you prefer this vintage cover more. Well, thanks for the info; previously I had not been able to find some of the original Chinese lines. The issue with the grey cover as in the info page you've given here sells at sky price in 2nd hand market. The same thing happens to other 'W. Germany version', 'original Germany version', or '1st England issue'... that's crazy. |

[#4541] Catharsis By the way, let me share another one of my favourites with you. Madam Flagstad sings song cycles by Mahler and Wagner in good stereo. Janet Baker is perhaps the only one who can come close to her. http://www.deccaclassics.com/music/legends/468486.html ![]()

[#4546] Mahler Hi erictang, So were you overwhelmed by a general atmosphere of impending loss or misfortune as the music approaches its final movement? I am curious about Boulez's Mahler (including the symphonies) but not sure about the singers. Any idea? ![]()

[#4547] Mahler Hi Wal, I have only listened a little bit of it. I have the Telarc Mahler no.8 for a few years but have not finished it. In fact, I'm a beginner in Mahler and the 19th century composers. I'm getting used to some of the ones by Shostakovich, Kabalevsky, Prokofiev which I usually start with their cello music. I find music of Mahler is rather different from the ones by these Russian composers, not to mention those of Baroque or Classical periods. Maybe I'm already too old to get familiar with new things. ![]()

[#4549] Mahler Maybe, I'm getting old and enjoy vintage restaurant much more than those modern chained-group ones. Have a chance to visit 'Louxx Steak House' (opposite to telecom house, Wan Chai) last week and revisit with my boss yesterday. The set lunch is very affordable in terms of food quality, especially NZ steak. Not sure, if this affordable set is available on Sunday or not.

[#4552] Mahler Hi Wal, I've finished listening to Das Lied von der Erde and note the following from the record sleeve. Seven of Bethge's paraphrases are compressed into six songs, divided between tenor and low voice, with a free choice between contralto and baritone. The preference for a female voice goes back to Bruno Walter, who conducted the first performance, given posthumously on November 20, 1911 in Munich.
