[#4598] 花花 and 小白
Sorry 小白... you are as SMART as Peter O'toole :] Both have beautifully innocent eyes.

I have been looking for Callas' Carmen, but since it's on sale I shan't be able to hug it until next week...

Haha yes... but heater is not as warm as your Daddy! He'll be very happy if you two rest on him in this cool-but-not-cold winter!

You two are so cute...

Yes, we go to daddy while hifi is off, sit on the computer and hit delete key occassionally. When there is music, sit on the power amp heater to enjoy.

The heater is 花花's territory, the last picture is a rare occassion.

Here come the Callas.

Hey hey you are 'big brother', teach her (tenderly) to share good place with you ma~~ be good brother and sister : ]

Are you kittens and cats interested in computer? You all seem particularly to be fond of 'delete' and 'space' keys... Both, to us human, are not a good thing, except when we are talking about Chinese painting.

[#4604] Liszt Piano Concerto
For No.1 third movement, I like the triangle but would like there is a bass drum. But...

Quoted from the CD note:

The second movement links a contemplative Adagio (with prominent woodwind solos) to a scherzo featuring the triangle in an unexpectedly important role. The Viennese critic Hanslick was moved to dub the work the "Triangle" Concerto ... The finale uses material from the Adagio, transforming the lyrical mood into a march for brass and cymbal, carefully marked by Liszt (the new champion of percussion instruments) "without bass drum".

Hi BilDub,
Hitting the 'delete' key is not a big deal, but the 'enter' followed as confirmation is a diaster. Luckily, only encountered marginally.

The 'U' key is removed once I pick up 花花 from the notebook computer.

Hi Tanuski,

Probably you won't have a photo of Mr Wucius Wong more recent than this one I took two months ago, so let me do the uploading job for you for the time being.

Here we are, the Greenspot drinking Mr Wucius Wong, one of the world's greatest contemporary painters.

Dear Professor Trollope and others,

Your over praise simply blush me red. Wish I could live up to the expectation. Deep down I feel like a parasite to the society. The guilty of non-productive, the helplessness of not being able to carry on our tradition and provide a new perspective, plus the existence of cultural giants, for an instance Wucius, definitely humbled me.

Just like what Trazom said, Tanuski has turned into an "old cake" after abroad for 24 years. Still remember those days when Chinese Immigrant from the States traveled to HK and looked for a wife. We named them "Gold Mountain Ah Uncle" in the 60's. Out of a sudden I am part of the group- "oldies of San Francisco"…... More than often I bring out Bob Dylan's album and listen to his "Forever Young" repeatedly. Unfortunately I cannot stop the clock from ticking.

Anyway thank you for posting the resent pictures of Mr. Wong. He seems to be in good shape and takes an active role in the HK art. Please send my regard next time Trollope runs into him.

In one of the chapter Ch'ien Mu discussed about Death: Chinese (Asian) defines his noble character through fulfilling duty.
Common people retire after reaching a certain age, after finishing a certain responsibility. On the other hand "great virtues" constantly perform for the benefit of his race. He will practically works till the end of his days.
The sum up of his lifetime deed is going to be a perfect circle, from birth to fade. Death is a necessity. There is nothing scary about it. Through death great character will find their names inscribed into history…. Wucius as a contemporary Chinese intellect, I can almost see his name imprinted in the history of Chinese Art. Wishes him good health.

PS (1) my apology for carrying the topic further away from Classical music.

(2) Sharing an autumn pict. of Central Park.

Dear Tanuski,

I think all forms of art are inter-connected, so it'll never be too far away from music when we're talking about painting. As for modernist painters I am always amazed by the 'innocence' embedded in Balthus' paintings.

Tonight I seek energy from Lalo's Symphonie espagnole. The third movement drives me to a foreign exotic dreamland. Walking between Mahler and Lalo, recently, makes me, sometimes, forget where I am.

[#4615] Martzy's Brahms concerto
Scrimped and saved to pay for this: my first and only Martzy CD.

Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64
Brahms: Violin Concerto in D major, op. 77
Johanna Martzy / Philharmonia Orchestra / Paul Kletzki [1955, 1954]
Testament SBT 1037: ADD (mono) 1994

A CD to relax with. I was somewhat worried about her Brahms, for fear that she might be too much of a 閨秀派 to handle it. But no, she has her own voice and she brings out delicacies here and there that I don't remember offered by Heifetz, Oistrakh, and Szeryng. And I haven't much qualm about the mono sound (Walter Legge + Kingsway Hall). The violin is projected quite forward, but not really unnaturally, and how captivating it is! The sound of the orchestra is a lot less full-bodied.

[#4616] Martzy's Brahms concerto

My only other CD of this piece of music that is played by a female violinist is:

Brahms: Violin Concerto in D, op. 77
Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, op. 26
Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg / Minnesota Orchestra / Edo de Waart [1988]
EMI CDC 7 49429 2: DDD 1989

My comments: 支離淺率,有句無章,雕鏤太過,不無沉悶,古人云大江無風,浪濤自湧,斯之謂也。

It would be interesting to compare Martzy with other female violinists in Brahms's concerto. There are six I could think of offhand: Haendel, Hahn, Little, Mutter, Neveu, Udagawa. But I own none of them.
