| [#4624] Lalo's Symphonie espagnole Hello BilDub, About the 3rd movement of Symphonie espagnole (my previous posting on 05-08-06 22:33) There are only 4 movements instead of 5 in some recordings like Heifetz (RCA - Gold Seal GD87709). I find the following from a record sleeve today: 'As this title implies, Lalo first gave his work the four-movement pattern of a symphony - here Allergo non troppo, Scherzando, Andante and rondo - but before the first performance (on Feb 7, 1875), and at Saraste's request, he inserted an Intermezzo on a habanera rhythm between the Scherzando and the Andante. Today the work is played either in five movements or in its inital form.' |

In this recording, I find the trills played by both Barenboim and the orchestra are forceful. Below is interesting note from the record sleeve: People who are addicted to labels might well call this "the trills movement" to significant and memorable are the trills that break out in the forceful main theme of the first subject group after the preliminary drum roll. |

| [#4626] Female violinists trollope: You wrote some great stuff! I do not like Salerno-Sonnenberg in general. You got me started on female violinists, an interesting breed. Some general comments. "...It would be interesting to compare Martzy with other female violinists in Brahms's concerto. There are six I could think of offhand: Haendel, Hahn, Little, Mutter, Neveu, Udagawa. But I own none of them." Martzy can certainly be first class. I think of these Mutter can be ignored. I think Chung is more interesting. Haendel can be good but somehow does not stand out either. Hahn is an idol of mine, but her recording, good as it is, does not compare with her live performance with the HKPO. Little is a classy violinist, as judged by her performance of the Beethoven with the HKPO. I quite like Neveu. I do not even know of Udagawa. | [#4628] Female violinists Hello! Sibelius violin concerto by Camilla Wicks is one of thr treasures of the 20th century. Its been out of print for many years, previously on toshiba EMI I think. Recently there are some reissues on a small japanese label as well as korean EMI For female violinists in Brahms violin concerto, if I could only pick one, it would probably be Neveu with Schmidt Isserstedt Cheers |
