[#4658] 慎買多聽 Patrick Wong, Thanks for your information,. Do you have any other "Japan/Philips" to share with us? Erictang, I bought this CD almost double price last year. But find she plays very warm and romantic. (Kyung-Wha Chung - Souvenirs ~ A collection of favourite violin pieces). How is Yoyo's concert?

[#4662] 慎買多聽 Grumiaux is one of my favorite violinists. I think most of classical fans would have his recordings of the violin short pieces. I had the European pressing CD many years ago and gave to my friend (as I have the LPs). I have not compared the sound quality of this Japanese CD with other releases. I think it is better than the European pressing CD. It is quite strange. Usually, the sound quality of those Japanese LPs is worse than those European pressing LPs. However, the sound quality of quite many Japanese pressing CDs is better than CDs made in other countries (EU or US). ![]()

[#4663] 慎買多聽 A very good CD of Milstein from the Toshiba EMI Grandmaster series. I was amazed the good sound quality of this CD when I played the first track (CDs from the Toshiba EMI Grandmaster series are available in Hong Kong. However, I think many of the items are already out of stock.) ![]()

[#4664] Milstein Miniatures This CD is a must if you like Milstein. The sound quality is even better than the Toshiba EMI Grandmaster series. The price of the original release LP is high for these recordings because of bad sound quality of many CDs. I hope more and more of such high quality CDs can be released in the future. (And hope the SACD can really achieve better sound quality.) ![]()

[#4666] Milstein Miniatures _________________________________ Considering the strong recommendation of Dr. JC, I decided to give Hilary Hahn a try today. And I was quite surprise by her performance. Rather fluent I should say. A lot better than I thought...... _________________________________ ![]()

[#4667] 回覆(40):慎買多聽 Trollope: Well said. I'm the most 該打該打!The best way to 慎買多聽 is actually borrow from the library. I have discovered so many wonderful CDs that way. patrickwong: You should grab this 6-CD Nathan Milstein box, which retails for $3xx now! Tanuski: What I like most about Hahn is her phrasing, totally natural and seamless. Her performance with the HKPO was even greater! She's my idol. Go to her website and she comments on impressions of HK. ![]()

[#4671] Hahn trazom: So you are a real fan of Hahn! I own the Brahms and Mendelssohn/Shostakovich and I like them. I've listened to most of the others (borrowing from library). The Bach solo CD is great. The Bach concerti suffer from the very coarse playing of the LA chamber under Kahane; she deserves better. The Beethoven is good but I rate it slightly below the other efforts. The Barber/Meyer is very good but I have resrvation about the music, particularly the Meyer. Have not listened to the Elgar. What I'm most cusrious about is the new recital! I've heard great things. What do you think?

[#4672] 回覆(40):慎買多聽 Hi doctorjohn, >> You should grab this 6-CD Nathan Milstein box >> (the Art of Nathan Milstein) , which retails >> for $3xx now! Thank you for your information. It is really a real bargain for this 6-CD box set selling below HK$400. However, I already have LPs and CDs of some recordings. And the main reason is the sound quality of the CDs. The sound quality of many classical CDs is improved quite a lot (but some are going to the reverse direction). I have the experience that I owned four different versions of CDs (different releases) of the same recordings just because of the difference in sound quality. I think Toshiba EMI will release most of the Milstein’s recordings later and the sound quality will be better than the 6-CD box set. So, I do not consider buying this box set though it is cheap. Sometimes, I like to convert my LPs to CDs (sound of LPs is good but it is more convenient to listen the CDs). It surprises me that the sound quality of some CDs converted from LPs is quite good and sometimes can be better than the official released CDs. However, it is very time consuming to make a good CD if I manually do the sound restoration like removing of the ticks or noise from some old records. (Surely can be done quickly by software but the sound quality is not as good as that by manual operation).

[#4673] Hahn Hi Doctorjohn, The most I like is Shostakovich, then Mendelsohn esp. on the Cadenza of playing SHostakovich As you said: "What I like most about Hahn is her phrasing, totally natural and seamless" And Brahms CD get a Reward..that is no doubt My highly recommendation is the Barber and Meyer* Mozart Violin Sonatas, Well! the Violin is outstanding...but the piano is not ready.

[#4675] Hahn >> Patrick, Thanks for your sharing. Here is a good place to share our music experiment. I benefit greatly by reading the sharing from different members (and sometimes there are refreshing photos too!) I think this thread started a long time ago. However, I have just noted this thread recently because it seems that it does not belong to any group/type (類型) and this thread can only display when no group is selected.

[#4677] Rodin I have some vivid memories of Rodin's "The Thinker" (perhaps his most famous sculpture) I saw near the Meyer Library at Stanford University some 14 years ago. I have been told that it is not in exactly the same place now. Probably in the Cantor Center for Visual Arts in the campus.
