[#467] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to Verdi's requiem last night, a really dramatic requiem totally different from Brahms, may be Verdi was trying to wake their spirit up from their graves. Fricsay's recording listed here was a live recording from 1960 which was different from the 1955 recording. The recording was trueful considered its age, but the exciting and dramatic performance by Friscay make you forget the sonic limitation. ![]()

Marsur? trazom, Thank you for sharing too, I think you must have better understanding on vocal music than me, one major obstacle of enjoying vocal music is language barrier. |

[#473] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night I went to a New York Philharmonic concert. Though not the best looking, Lincoln Center still has the scale to exude a bit of grandeur. Aside from the rather pedestrian lobby, Avery Fisher Hall looks good from high up the tiers. I was struck again by how beautifully dressed some of the people were, and that's NY. In general, the Europeans have more chic though, and there're a lot of them there. Even the most dressed up HK Arts Festival crowd cannot remotely compare in style. The audience was out in full force, no doubt to catch a glimpse of the young cellist Alicia Weilerstein in the Elgar cello concerto. She came out in a pink dress and played magnificently. Wasn't DuPre frequently dressed in pink? Her tone was hugh and beautiful, though sometimes just a bit off-center. She was tempestuous and took chances, and that was good. Perhaps a bit more pathos would not be wanting but too much to ask. The Elgar seems to be in vogue and this cellist's playing was superior to the others heard recently. Zubin Mehta accompanied most tightly but one wished for some tenderness. An English Elgar this was not. The New York Philharmonic seem to have improved since the last visit. There's a new sheen and spirit in the strings. They played really cleanly and the gradation of dynamics was really stunning. All the great chords and dissonance and cresendoes in the Bruckner were displayed like museum pieces and lessons in virtuosity. The brass tone was really warm and beautiful. But alas, Zubin Mehta has not gotten better with age. He still conducts the obvious and does not pay too much attention to color nor shaping. The music came out in stretches, the transitions without inevitability. Where was the struggle, the sense of journey?

[#475] What are you listening to? ( classical mus doctorjohn, Thank you for your detailed review. Live performence Bruckner's symphony is always an occasion, I must say that I have never heard Bruckner live, hope Edo de Waarts and HKPO could added some Bruckner's symphony into their program. Although I cannot attend a live concert like doctorjohn did, I listened to an excellent Bruckner's symphony No 5 on disc yesterday, it was play by London Philharmonic orchestra a conducted by Most. The tempo was faster than what I accustomed to ( like those by Jochum), but the melody was flowing and the drama in the music was brought out most intensely. Digital recording by EMI was very good too, all in all a real bargain. ![]()

[#476] What are you listening to?

[#479] What are you listening to? ( classical mus I have attended the concert of Mahler's symphony No.5 by Edo de Warrts last year, really an experience of a lifetime. I found the adagio of Bruckner's symphony No. 7 very moving, I would count it as one of the greatest adagio in classical music.
