[#4819] Messiah - Painting Hi Wal, At the moment, I don't have a solid answer for you. But If I have to make a choice now, I will choose Callas. According to my vague memory, her singing is rather different from the others. And I've seen the Callas CD set at $99 a few weeks ago. I will go over the two in the coming days; or if you are interested enough, you're welcome to my place for the evaluation. Actually, I went over the 2 tracks of all the 9 sets yesterday afternoon, but most of my memory has been erased when doing the summary late last night which is after visiting the peak (with a relative from overseas). In fact, I also have the Beecham CD set (ART Series 5 67353 2). I find the difference in sonic effect between some CD tracks is noticable. From the booklet: This recording was made at widely separated sessions in 1958 and 1959 in the early days of stereo. As a consequence, the listener may notice some slight technical flaws that derive from the original tapes. The sky was clear and the scene from the peak is really amazing. Just share with you a zone/yuk/mog picture of the 青馬 bridge taken last Sunday with a semi- 人肉三腳架. The 人肉三腳架 in the peak is better, but the memory stick have gone with the camera tonight. See if I will receive the pictures later and can find a good one to post here. ![]()

[#4820] Kempff's Goldberg Hello dvmrp, An interesting LP that you have. I have never seen this cover before (CD or LP). But I am not sure that this is "Kempff 去世那年的錄音". The keyboard giant died in 1991. Could he have done it at the age of 95 or 96? I think this is the same version we have been offered in DG's "Galleria" (439 978-2) -- a July 1969 recording (Hannover). This is the Japanese CD that I have. ![]()

[#4821] Kempff's Goldberg As you have noticed, Kempff did away with the ornaments. The whole piece goes faster and less baroque. Let's compare the playing time of each track between Kempff and Tureck. ![]()

[#4822] Kempff's Goldberg Tureck has put in everything, but is compelling all the same. Or, all the more? I don't think so. Kempff's Bach is very much my cup of tea. Utterly pianistic and simply timeless. ![]()

[#4824] Kempff's Goldberg Hi Eric, Well, I was at the Peak yesterday (20th) too. The sky was far from clear. What a glorious city we have, but something really has to be done about our air. ![]()

[#4825] 'Clear sky after rain' Hey erictang, Yes. Let's meet later for an album contest perhaps as I settle down. I have always been amazed to see here your LPs with the beautiful covers. I will try to bring along some of the rarities I got!

[#4826] Bellini operas Hi erictang (again) and friends, Do you like Bellini operas too? I got Il Puritani (with Sills and Gedda on Westminster) and La Sonnambula (with Callas and Monti) only. I'd like to try more later. I know Sutherland is famous for this kind of opera but I am afraid of' her because I can never hear what words she's singing! * * * Mado Robin - glass-breaking voice. ![]()

[#4827] Bellini operas _________________________________ Thanks for the nice pictures, Eric and Trollope. I went on a cruise last weekend. The weather was sunny, bright but cold. Trying to get a good shot on the deck, my fingers also got frozen. It was only a matter of ten, fifteen minutes….. Anyway I am sharing the outcome here. Cheer! _________________________________ ![]()

[#4828] "I life my lamp beside the golden door" Nice photo too, Tanuski. Oh, that pure blueness has long been someting of a rarity when we look up in HK. And the spirit that the Statue of Liberty stands for? "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free ..." The prospects look pretty bleak in HK too -- bleaker than our sky. --- A photo for Wal. ![]()

[#4835] 'Goldberg Variations' Hi Trollope, The 'Goldberg Variations' I've got is played by Ralph Kirkpatrick on the Harpsichord (Archiv label). Timing on each variation is about the Kempff you've shown. It is interesting to know the 'huge' difference of Tureck. Eg Aria 4:46 vs 1:57.

[#4836] Bellini Operas Hi Wal, For Bellini Operas, I got La Sonnambula, Norma, I Puritani. All of them are Sutherland plus one Norma by Callas. I'm not familiar with them, as least not as Carmen.

[#4837] Goldberg Is the Kirkpatrick good? I don't have any Goldberg on the harpsichord, for fear that the music will become too clean and lean. And by a scholar too? For Kirkpatrick is best known for his effort (not very successfully) to arrange Scarlatti's output in some rational order. Hence the "K" number of Scarlatti works. But the Penguin Guide has some nice things to say about K's Goldberg.
