A slight jump away from Perlemuter.

Finished my Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Barbara Walters tonight.

trollope:

Thx for the listing. It's amazing what can be found on Chinese issues!

If I remember correctly, the original Nimbus Chopin set was 5 or 6 CDs, so they are probably all here. I think the Nimbus Chopin set can sometimes still be found.

Nimbus had a recital CD which is probably where the Liszt came from, if memory does not fail.

The Ravel is certainly worth it, though probably not superior to the earlier VOX, if one can get them here.

I also have a CD of him playing the Mozart and Beethoven quintets.

And thx SO MUCH for scanning the book. Is that book available in HK?

[#4904] Davidovich's Chopin concertos
Hi lym and friends,

Earlier this morning I conducted a little blind test between these two editions. The recent "eloquence" re-issue wins hands' down. The absence of texture in the "Made in W. Germany" CD becomes apparent in this comparison.

Many thanks again for recommending Bella Davidovich to me. Her approach is very refined.

Do you have any idea when these recordings were made? I ask because I am confused. The back inlay of the "eloquence" edition is not exactly helpful.

Your observation after comparing the two versions seems directly opposite to many hifiers who are paying very high respect to those so called "silver ring" German or Japan early pressing CDs.

Now, with the earlier CD edition on my desk too, I become even more confused.

I really loathe this type of sloppiness, and from a big label too ...

I mainly played LPs and yes, early pressings generally sound better (airy and with an unfiltered feel) comparing to those reissued. Lately I heard people talking about early pressing CDs sound better as well. I am a bit skeptical until I acquired enough first person experience comparing them.

This is not a lone incident in my experience of blind tests.

Seven months ago I compared two editions of Emil Gilels' Hammerklavier Sonata: (1) the "Made in G. Germany" (410 527-2) one; (2) the one from Gilels' Beethoven piano sonatas 8-CD set released in 1996 (453 221-2). I have posted my opinion here. Let me re-post it again (slightly edited).

The W. Germany CD was released probably in 1987: the piano timbre is too bright and too hard, and the reverberant bloom is hardly truthful, so much so that seventeen years ago the Penguin Guide had this to say about the recording, "hearing Gilels play the work in London in 1984 left one in no doubt that there is more to the sound he produced in real life than the overlit quality the DG engineers have achieved."

The 1996 re-release is enhanced with "Original-image bit-processing". Whatever that means, the improvement is a stark reality. The touch of hardness is still there, but there is a full-bodied presence to match the grandeur of Beethoven + Gilels.

So, my friends, caution has to be exercised in investing in premium-priced "Made in West Germany first CD edition", except that you feel you have to spend the money for nostalgic reasons, or for a front cover painting or photo of rare distinction. If the latter is your case in Gilels's Beethoven Piano Sonata No.29, op.106 "Hammerklavier", spend your money on this one from DG's mid-priced "Originals" series: 463 639-2. Apart from better sound, you are offered as a bonus the sonata no.28.

And, let me quote myself again:

The notion that "West Germany versions" are valuable should be based, largely, on the condition that they have succumbed to the deletion axe, and on the unlikely prospect of their being re-issued.

They can indeed be collector's items as objects of historical and even aesthetic importance, because they are first editions, or because of the lovely cover pictures or photos, or the packaging ... etc. (For instance, the cover design of the older CD with Bella Davidovich's photo is to be preferred to the "eloquence" design.) But these are considerations that have little to do with the music in the CDs, and hence the pleasure to be had when the CDs are played.

If you cannot prove to me that they are better, or let's say even equal, sound carriers compared with their re-issued counterparts, I think we should see them for what they really are: products of early stage technology in digital transference.

Of course they can also be seen as lucrative business opportunities for second-hand CDs dealers.

I would venture to say that even if the "W. Germany" and "silver inner ring" etc CDs sound slightly more vivid (allowing that the factor of first pressing is at work), why bother to make deliberate attempts to hunt for them? And to pay so much more.

My so much better sounding "eloquence" Bella Davidovish costs only $35.

Hello bildub,

I think it was last year that I watched this DVD from library.

A very good documentary. Top quality footage. Absorbing presentation from Nigel Douglas.

You will have your questions answered therein.
