[#4938] Digital reverberation trollope: You have very good ears. Yes, Nimbus recordings add a lot of digital reverberation to soften the sound. They have been roundly criticized for this for a long time. For a long time I did not buy the ELOQUENCE series because some say the "ambience" is just added reverberation and many people frown on that series. But sometime ago I compared my (box set) Decca Shostakovich Symphony #5 (Haitink) with the Eloquence issue and surprisingly found the latter to be better! Anyway I agree with your philosophy. Trazom, thx for your information about the money you've paid. It's the historian in me who wants to know these details.

Was it Oscar Wilde who said something like most people know the price but not the value? Well, I know the value of a great number of CDs (eg. Japanese editions of European Jazz Trio), but I also know I cannot afford their prices. With my limited budget, it helps to know the value AND the price.

FYI, I paid $118 for (a) in 2002; $255 for (b) ten years ago; $90 for a Yedang version of (e) in 2003; and $60 for (f) in 2001.

A member of the Richter E-mail group reported that he paid 10 GBP for (c) a few months ago.

Nimbus went defunct, and some of the catalogue can also be found on BRILLIANT CLASSICS, but I think they are recently back.

Somehow Nimbus had great pianists under contract. If there's a Chinese Shura Cherkassky set it should be grabbed immediately.

But one of the best CD is the one of Youra Guller, Stravinsky's contemporary. Is she in the book of 'French Pianism'?

Youra Guller does not feature in the book, but its "Selected Discography" at the end suggests these recordings:

Beethoven: Sonatas, opp. 110 & 111. Nimbus 5016
Chopin: 11 Mazurkas; 5 Nocturnes. Dante HPC 021
"The Art of Youra Guller" -- works by Bach-Liszt, Chopin, Scarlatti, Couperin et al. Nimbus 5030

I don't see Cherkassky in the promotional booklet. My Cherkassky are limited to several Decca "Shura Cherkassky Live".
