Weekend may be out for hifi lunch yamcha. If possible, in the weekend morning from 10:00am to 12:00am is better. Otherwise, may be after 5:00pm. Position of the loudspeaker had been changed with a little bit more dynamic impact in mid-bass and also a little bit on deep bass. Also 場面深闊, 3D 感都好!!

For Wild_7, the updated "The Golden Dozen LPs" by HP as summarized as follows:-

1) Cat Stevens: Tea for the Tillerman (Island Records ILPS 9135)

2) Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade. Reiner (cond.), CSO, RCA LSC 2446 and Classic Records 33 and 45 rpm re-issues

3) Bacharach: Casino Royale (Soundtrack), Colgems COSO 5005

4) Britten: Prince of the Pagodas, Britten (cond.), Covent Garden Orchestra, Decca Ace of Diamonds GOS 558-9 (2 LPs) <HP's note: A first-rate demonstration disc, also a test of the accuracy of your VTA adjustment and overall top-to-bottom system balance........There is a mighty bass drum at several points.......Side one is the one to hear, and especially those four dances....)

5) Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3, Bryon Janis (piano), Antal Dorati (cond.), LSO, Mercury SR 90283

6) Respighi: The Pines of Rome, Reiner (cond.); CSO, RCA LSC 2446, Classic 33 and four-record 45 rpm set reissue

Some note missing due to special symbols used. Hereunder is the update:-

Since you have to register to see the captioned "The Golden Dozen LPs", I have summarized it (from June/July 2007 The Absolute Sound) as follows:-

1) Cat Stevens: Tea for the Tillerman (Island Records ILPS 9135)
My note: Notify that one of the largest LP dealer in USA selling this LP claimed the best stamper for US$299.- Wow!!

2) Rimsky-Korsakov: Scheherazade. Reiner (cond.), CSO, RCA LSC 2446 and Classic Records 33 and 45 rpm re-issues
HP's note: He prefers the later issue on "White Dog"

3) Bacharach: Casino Royale (Soundtrack), Colgems COSO 5005
HP's note: He suggests to get the earliest original pressing such as 3s.

4) Britten: Prince of the Pagodas, Britten (cond.), Covent Garden Orchestra, Decca Ace of Diamonds GOS 558-9 (2 LPs)
HP's note: A first-rate demonstration disc, also a test of the accuracy of your VTA adjustment and overall top-to-bottom system balance........There is a mighty bass drum at several points.......Side one is the one to hear, and especially those four dances....

5) Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 3, Bryon Janis (piano), Antal Dorati (cond.), LSO, Mercury SR 90283
My Note: Previously many think about Janis' Liszt is the best playing and recording in Mercury, but I love this as the Rachmaninoff 3 has much more beautiful lyrics.

6) Respighi: The Pines of Rome, Reiner (cond.); CSO, RCA LSC 2446, Classic 33 and four-record 45 rpm set reissue
My Note: Suggested by reviewers in RCA Bible that the 1st pressing A1 1s is the best, but also the most expensive.

To be continued........................

continued...............

7) Gerhard: The Plague, Dorati (cond.); McCowen (narrator); NSO & Chorus. Decca Headline Head 6
HP's note: This disc is particularly chilling to hear with the lights low; hissing sounds and whispered sighs from the chorus.....a formidable bass drum with sudden outbursts of percussion....

8) Arnold: Dances-English, Scottish and Cornish, Arnold (cond.), LPO. Lyrita SRCS-109
HP's note: All eight of the English Dances are in a class by themselves, and sonic knockouts. you can hear the studio's wooden walls (and relatively short decay time when the big bass drum is hit). In this case, the short decay and neutral acoustic breathe extra life into the transients, but never extra brightness or harshness.............
My note: This one is my all time favorite playing on my turntable. I love this more than Arnold's latest Overtures from Reference Recordings though with same dynamic (or even better)

9) Bernard Hermann: The Three Worlds of Gulliver (from The Mysterious Film World of Bernard Herrmann.) Herrmann (cond.), NPO. Decca PFS 4337
My note: I love this much than the other golden dozen LPs, I think Doctor John would also love this.

10) The Weavers at Carnegie Hall. The Weavers. Vanguard Stereolab VSD; also Classic Records 4-disc 45 rpm set (now out of print, alas)
HP's note: Both the original and Classic remastering, not only captures the sound of the hall but also the sound of an audience in that hall.
My note: HP not listed the earliest reissue by Vanguard using Midline Series, this still can be found in sealed condition in eBay. Perhaps the sonic not matched with HP's taste as the soundstage not good as the original and the vocal appeared light. Yes, I had the original but sold last year.

11) Belafonte at Carnegie Hall, Harry Belafonte, et al. RCA LSO-6006 (two discs); also Classic Records, 2-disc 33 remastering and an 8-disc 45 rpm set
HP's note: It provides a historical record of one of the hall's most famous moments. ...."Matilda," which closes the album (last song also in CD). Belafonte, like a choir director in a southern church, gets different sections of the audience to participate in a call/response sing-along. He stars with the most expensive seats down front and moves back, each time farther away from the stage and the mikes, and so providing an exact replica of Carnegie's acoustic delays.
My note: Once I heard this in limage's place, I learnt what HP's said that "the hall's most famous moments", each hall has its sound. So this LPs/CDs become my audition software. Also, it brings me back to the live concert and teaches me how to set up my dead cheap audio gears. Thank to limage, thanks to Belafonte and thanks to Bob Simpson (the recording engineer, hope I've not stated his name wrong). The original can be easily found in eBay but hard to find the first issue (1s pressing or earliest pressing) but the 180gm Classic Records reissue seems harder to find in eBay as audiophiles know that the reissue is better than the original, isn't it?

12) Stravinsky: The Firebird. Antal Dorati (cond.), LSO, Mercury SR 90266 and Classic 3-disc 45 rpm set
My note: The best Firebird ever recorded and performed. This one being the love among some ETSC members who want to have this "bird" in their collection. However, both the original and the 180gm Classic Records reissue are hard to find nowadays.

ILS, 會長,

Our focus is more on the software side, might not be that attractive to audiophiles, but we are always here.

Cheers.
