[#5138] Christian Ferras - Brahms violin concerto My recollection is that he's got a sweet and full tone. Main source of my recollection: Romantic Violin (Works by Kreisler, Schumann, Schubert, Dovrák, Saint-Saëns et al.) Christian Ferras (violin) / Jean-Claude Ambrosini (piano) [1960] DG (Special) 427 015-2: AAD

[#5143] Christian Ferras Refreshing music for the Christmas Season. You may need to turn up the volume control as volume in this recording is a bit low. Track information: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-reviews/B0000040X1/ref=cm_cr_dp_2_1/104-8385704-9093562?%5Fencoding ![]()

[#5146] Ferras and other fiddlers trollpe, Tanuski, eric, lym, and friends: Merry X'mas and happy New Year!!!!! Yes, Ferras may not be the greatest violinist, but he is very very good and more than decent compared with most of today's fiddlers. Talking about todays fiddlers, there are a few good ones. Foremost to me, Hilary Hahn. Excellent Vadim Repin, Vengerov. From the newest batch I'm MOST impressed with Khachaturian (EMI Debut, Avie), whom I think will be one of the greatest.

[#5147] Ferras and other fiddlers In that case, it's a double miss for me. Let me re-visit my Pinnock set some time later. When it's played, "the glory of the Lord shall be revealed." Thx for the info anyway.

[#5148] Ferras and other fiddlers Season's Greetings to you too, doctorjohn. I have spent some time listening to Perlemuter's two Ravel CDs. The Nimbus artifical sound isn't as devastating here as it is in the Chopin CDs. In a way, it brings about a 煙水迷離之致.

[#5153] Messiah in the Park I was there. Ok for outdoors. Naturally sound is not the best. But the soprano Yuki Ip is simply astonishing. She stunned me with her very refined singing, exemplary control and passion. Nothing missing. The countertenor Marcus Choy is pitiable.

[#5154] Messiah in the Park Hi Eric (and ALL), Thanks for tipping me off about the RTHK link. I am listening to it at this very moment. There are occasional pauses brought about by bouts of "buffering", but the sound is clean and clear all right. Once again it's a joy to follow the text – such elegant language! It really is soul-enriching to listen to Handel's vocal and choral music from time to time. His religious works are invariably musical and seldom boring. Have you tried his two great Psalm-settings "Dixit Dominus" and "Nisi Dominus"? They are works of art that no doubt meet the aesthetical as well as the theological requirements. Operas are of course great vehicles for the expression of strong emotions; and certainly many of the most beautiful musical compositions are heard in the opera house. But let us be honest, some of their librettos are starkly silly. "In opera, anything that is too stupid to be spoken is sung." (Voltaire)

[#5155] Messiah in the Park ________________________ Trollope, Glad you found an interest in the picture. I scanned it from an old book. Actually it is an ex-library copy. For your viewing pleasure, I gave it a nice clean up. Posting it here to lift the thread. Dual purpose. BTW After the sequel, Caleb Carr totally lost the magic touch. I have other copies of his writing…... and none of them worth our time. What a bomber! I guess he is another example of popularity taking over creativity, good life turning alchemy to stone. ________________________ ![]()

[#5157] Ferras ncki: I'm not an expert on Ferras. But I think all his recordings are decent. If I've to pick one I'll choose the DGG Sibelius with Karajan, available in several guises, in the GALLERIA or ORIGINALS as well as the budget PANORAMA 2CD set: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004XN6L/103-7894533-1107036?v=glance&n=5174 Also an excellent buy is the super budget French EMI box "Les Introuvables de Christian Ferras" (so many great buys in that series!): http://www.musicabona.com/catalog/0724357487221.html.en ![]()
