[#5150] Harbeth同好會 The Skylan stands tighten up the sound quite a bit. The bass becomes more solid and the overall sound tightens up. It sounds almost like a power amp upgrade to me. I feel there is more control over the music. The stands made a believer out of me. I was never convinced that 2 relatively solid stands of the same height would make much of a difference. But the difference I feel is not subtle. |

[#5151] Harbeth同好會 your speaker stand is a good example, i went through that too. i think at some point we all come to conclusion that many audio myth is actually not myth at all, while many cardinal rules aren't rules either. other than playing beautiful music, there's really fun coming from playing with hifi itself. |

[#5155] Harbeth同好會 HiFi myths are sometimes true even though not always. At first, I thought putting pre and power Amp on the floor would be the same as putting them on racks. Just different places to put them. But after I put them in the rack, the sound tightened up and the highs and lows are extended. Just like speaker stands, it is much better on top of skylan stand than on wooden stools in my place. |

[#5163] Harbeth同好會 The Skylan stand sounds good despite it feeling sort of plastiky even after filled with kitty litter. Considering that the columns are made of plastic it is no wonder. Which begs the question: the M30s are designed not heavily braced and to be “lossy”. Hence their recommendation of skinny open frame design stands like these ones: http://www.planetofsoundonline.com/view.php?m=3626b831f1 If that is the case then isn’t the thick Skylan stands against the design of the Harbeth? |

[#5164] Harbeth同好會 Just a guess, the reason of using open frame is to avoid interference of bass radiation (4pi), so that bass can emit in all directions. Open frame stand certainly achieves this target. Perhaps stands like Skylan achieves this target equally well. The top plate may not block the bass radiation as long as there is empty space underneath. I think only when the stand is a form of single solid column with top plate dimension exactly equal to the speaker, the downward bass radiation may be blocked. All in all, it is just concerning bass response. Other than bass, human ear is more sensitive to midrange. Metal frame and MDF/PVC have different resonance signature to mid high which is more crucial than bass. That maybe the reason makes Skylan outperforms other. |

[#5166] Harbeth同好會 I also do not understand why Harbeth boss' assertion that stands do not make much differences as long as they all bring the speakers to right same listening height. Are we all too anal about sound? What about Alan's insistence that any amplifier power greater than a few 10's of watts are a waste of energy? I have a feeling that Alan listens very differently than most of us. If that is the case than how did he come up with such good design? |

[#5168] Harbeth同好會 To certain extent, I appreciate AS’ skepticism on all sorts of hifi tweaking. As a designer and engineer, he should focus only on objective measurement, leave the tweaking part to end users. Since some hifi tweakings are quite environment dependent and subjective, if he focus too much on tweaking and turned out not working well in our home. It is not very nice, right? |
