[#5199] Elgar - Kennedy Hi Trollope, Yes, the Kennedy-Elgar is a CD at $45 from a 2nd hand shop 'recollection' in Central. I bought it a few months ago. Apart from CD, LP; there are lots of 2nd hand book in the shop. You might find gems there.

[#5202] Elgar - Kennedy Mine was bought 14 years ago at $65. Not too bad for a new CD.

[#5204] Elgar - Kennedy My De Pre + Barenboim Brahms cello sonatas CD is the EMI full price mono version (Apr 1968) 5 57293 2, recommended by Tanuski. I think they are not the same as those in your EMI Gemini.

[#5205] Elgar - Kennedy Trollop, Yes, it is the one coupled with Brahms, but I used to listen her Sibelius. It is mono version made in 1945, with "si si" background noise. But the violin is much better than 鄭京和,Further more, I found there is 爆咪聲 in 3rd movement in 鄭京和 version. Because Neveu is mono, I would also like to get new stereo version such as 林昭亮. or new verion by Kennedy. However, the quantity of my CD is double of the capacity of my CD cabinet, I hope to get comment or advice before to buy new one. 慎買多聽。 ![]()

[#5206] Elgar - Kennedy Many thanks, supera, and for an echo of the motto too. I have heard the merits of this Neveu, so I was curious. Now I begin to seriously consider it. Lin's 1987 recording on CBS is my first Sibelius violin concerto CD. It's worth your money if marked now in mid price. I have two more CDs of this work. Akiko Suwanai's (2002) is an expensive Japanese Philips (UCCP-1065), with a stunningly beautiful CD cover photo of the soloist. The playing is beautiful but I am afraid not stunningly so. If you would want to invest in one more version of this work, I would recommend Ida Haendel's 1975 recording. It's available in EMI's "encore", at the bottom bargain price of $39.

[#5209] Elgar - Kennedy I noted that Ida Haendel was learning from Enesco & Flesch, sames teachers of Neveu & Szeryng. I feel much interesting to get Ida's version for comparison, thank you. ![]()

[#5210] Elgar - Kennedy 諏訪內晶子 is also available on SACD, in case (a) you have a player for this format; (b) you are charmed by her photo and become curious about how she would actually sound. Among low to mid price versions, Heifetz (RCA or Naxos or EMI) offers a cool approach to match Sibelius's sentiment. There are other important but alas more expensive CDs, like Oistrakh (Testament), Kuusisto (Ondine), and Kavakos (BIS). I haven't got the money for them yet.

[#5211] Elgar - Kennedy Yes, 諏訪內晶子 is very beautiful indeed. It's good idea to have both audio & visual enjoyment. I also have Heifetz RCA SACD, but I just feel he played very fast, 好似趕收工, no feeling left in my momery. I don't like it very much although he is the most famous violinist.

[#5212] Elgar - Kennedy Ineed Heifetz has got this cold-fish tone, not helped by RCA's dry recorded sound.

[#5213] Sibelius Violin Concerto There is a good description and comparison of different versions of the Sibelius violin concerto in the book “十大名曲版本比較 : 新齊物論 / 陳國修, 崔光宙著”, it is worth reading. The book can be borrowed in the public library. I myself like the interpretation of Heifetz very much (especially the mono recording with Beecham). supera, I think you used the description “好似趕收工” is too negative for the Heifetz Sibelius recording. Though music appreciation is quite personal, I hope you will like the interpretation of Heifetz in the future.

[#5214] Sibelius Violin Concerto I do not know why quite many people say that Heifetz is cold. I do not agree with that “Heifetz is cold”, indeed, I would rather say “Heifetz is hot”. There is a text about “Heifetz is cold” in the music note of the CD “Heifetz Never-Before-Published and Rare Live Recordings Volume 5”. I would like to quote the text below. ![]()

[#5215] Sibelius Violin Concerto Very interesting reading. Thanks, patrickwong. I'll re-read it later tonight. ~~~~~ Supera, for Sibelius's violin concerto, let's not forget Ferras / Karajan (DG). Meanwhile, here's one more photo for you. ![]()

[#5217] Sibelius Violin Concerto But I find her earliest CD more 耐聽, perhaps because she was less 顧盼生姿 in her debut recording (1996, St John's, Smith Square) with Sir Neville's ASMF. ![]()
