| [#504] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last Saturday I went to the HKPO concert featuring Gerstein as pianist. It was G's encore appearance after last year's last minute step in on Rach 3. He played Ravel's piano concert for two hands and the Rhapsody in Blue. Gerstein to the piano is like Sampras to tennis - totally effortless and in control, technically perfect. I'm not a fan of Ravel's music, nor Gershwin's to that effect. But the Rhapsody is of course much easier to listen to at face value. Gerstein brought off a very eloquent performance of the two pieces. He impressed with the intense attention he paid to the orchestra when playing. Pianistically very satisfying. None of the two pieces can be described as emotionally charged. I hope to hear Gerstein again playing pieces big enough for his heart and technique. The other two pieces were La Mer and An American in Paris. Again I'm not a big fan of Debussy. AAIP is like a director's cut of Rhapsody in Blue without the piano, lengthier but not necessarily saying anything more. Orchestra was in good form under de Waart. Andrew Simon really stole the show with his cat meow that introduced the Rhapsody, and his unabashedly jazzy playing. A shame I couldn't go to the Mahler 5 this weekend. |

| [#510] What are you listening to? ( classical mus cfh, Although Gershwin was not my favorite, his Rhapsody in Blue was a masterpiece. Ravel's piano concerto was one of my favorite concerto, influence by Jazz and Blue music, from the very first noted, his music was infused with energy you may only found in the music of those jazz band in bar. The second movement was a mix of ice and fire, this time the blue melody steal the limelight. And the exciting third movement was a perfect vehicle to show off pianist skill. Along with Bartok's piano concerto, this is a masterpiece among 20th century piano concerto. Zimerman's version was the best I have ever heard of, Michelangeli's version was a classic, you may choose either one.  |

But for Chopin, sorry for being too obsessive, I once again recommend Zimerman, his first recording was standard textbook playing not lacking in sensitivity, while his second attempt was more improvisional, putting his personal stamp on this great work.  |

( classical mus Yesterday, I listened to disc two of Bartok's orchestral pieces, I brought it recently mainly because I found it to be a real bargain, as they are all DDD recording as recent as 1997, one disc have acquired the gramophone best orchestral awards but the whole box was sold at $117 only. But I found really enjoyable music here, disc two was short orchestral pieces which was written when Bartok was gathering folk song from hungarian countryside, he incorporate those folk tune into his music mixing it up with his stereotypic springy hungarian rthythum, making disc two a really enjoybale program for Sunday afternoon. Disc one was equally fine, the famous concerto for orchestra was very well recorded. Did not have time to listen to disc three yet, but I hope it would be as enjoyable as disc one and two. |
