| [#5398] DG set trollope: Thx so much for the DG set info. I'm astonished that such a thing gets issued! I have to buy it. Where did you get it? In fact I'm considering box I, though I've already some of it. But the piano set is certainly the gem. I've always liked Monique Haas, whose Ravel works on DG are excellent (the concerti issued on Originals), so I'm delighted she has a Mozart concerto! The Lucerne Festival Orchestra is ad-hoc and often star-studded. My super Eurodisc set of Bach (still my favorite interpretations): http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000000FL5/102-9706307-6061736?v=glance&n=5174 So the likes of Josef Suk, Aurele Nicolet, Christiane Jacottet there. On other albums, Maurice Andre, Schneiderhan etc too. But most importantly I think Baumgartner is an excellent conductor. Many of their recordings are treasurable. |

They have at least two things in common: number one, I enjoy both of them enormously; and number two, they were both completed in 1881. "For many readers and critics this is Henry James's masterpiece, a novel that has a rightful place in any gallery of great fiction." ("The Cambridge Guide to English Literature") Braham's second piano concerto symbolizes the great autumnal twilight of Romanticism in Western classical music. For instance, (b) was performed on Richter's 35th birthday. First choice must be (c). This recording is available more recently in a 2004 bargain release from RCA Red Seal (82876 60860-2) in the "classic library" series, coupled with Brahms's Piano Sonata No. 1. An acquaintance with the full price (d) will explain to you why so many people find Richter almost instantly irresistible, despite the more often than not poor quality recorded sound. This Doremi CD is made all the more valuable because of the coupling: Brahms's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24, his only recorded output of this work. As I am only an undeveloped connoisseur and not a pianist, I cannot begin to compare the respective merits of (c) and (d), except to say that they are both recordings to cherish. Version (c) is in stereo, so it enjoys the edge. Can we blame Richter for the lack of success in (e)? I don't know. Let's listen to what Richter has to say, "What hard work this recording was for the marvellous musician that Maazel is and for the third-rate orchestra that the Orchestre de Paris is! They all fancy themselves as soloists and constantly press ahead without paying the least attention to the conductor. That's why the quality of the recording is rather debatable, ..." Richter has performed this concerto at least 41 times in his career, and he included this work in the opening concert of his 1960 American tour which revealed his talents to the non-Soviet world. With Richter, this colossal concerto becomes very easy to get on with. The music of Brahms touches the sources of his genius, he is equally convincing both when he is solemn and gently songful. With his turbulent intelligence, Richter remains one of our foremost interpreters of Brahms, and in the case here, he enhances the timelessness of this 1881 composition. It is not often easy to make Brahms sound fresh and enlivening, for he is a Romantic in expression but a Classicist in form and technique. This paradoxical approach is part of his strength, and his craftsmanship means formidable challenges to his interpreters. There is gaiety in Richter's gravity, and he demonstrates Brahms's power of creative action impressively in this massive masterpiece. The piano ornaments he offers us in the Andante are hauntingly beautiful. Dear friends, in an ideal world, I should have written this report after listening to three more Brahms's second piano concerto + Richter CDs, they include: 1960, Boston; Charles Munch conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra (AS Disc) 1961, Moscow; Evgeny Mravinsky conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra (Russian Disc) 1962, Torino; Mario Rossi conducting the Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI (Stradivarius) Finally, you will, I guess, be curious to know what Richter himself thinks of the 1960 Chicago recording (which the "Penguin Guide" deems "one of the very finest performances"). OK, here we go, "one of my worst records, even though people still praise it to the skies. I can't bear it. I've lost count of the number of times I've listened to it in an attempt to find anything good in it. Each time I'm appalled.” Oh dear! Well, now I'm silenced. And that is about the right note with which to end this report.  |

| [#5403] Mozart Violin Sonata - Hahn Have a chance to take this CD home and I've been listening to it repeatedly during the week. This is my first listening to Hahn and she is a lot better than I thought initially. Hahn's playing is very detail. I don't have much recording on Mozart Sonata, only the complete set by Perlman/Barenboim plus a few by Grumiax/Klien. Overall, I prefer Hahn's playing over Perlman. For my favorite piece Sonata in e minor K304, I incline to the one by Grumiax/Klien.  |

If you want to explore more versions of D.574, try these two from Richter: Schubert: Violin Sonata in A major, op. 162 "Duo" David Oistrakh / Sviatoslav Richter [1966] Yedang YCC-0096: ADD (mono) 2002 Schubert: Violin Sonata in A, D.574 Shostakovich: Piano Trio in E, op. 67 Sviatoslav Richter (piano) / Oleg Kagan (violin) / Natalia Gutman (cello) [1985, 1984] Live Classics LCL 172: ADD 1997 But I don't know whether they are still widely available. Also, they are full price CDs. --- I began to like Hahn after listening to her Beethoven concerto.  |

I find Mutter's playing is a bit hurry and Bashmet is trying to catch up. He also mentioned "You might also want to get the video of Schubert's "Trout" quintet, filmed live in 1969, with Perlman,violin, Zukerman on viola, Daniel Barenboim, piano, Jacqueline DuPre, cello, and on string bass - Zubin Mehta. It shows another rare moment in time when great musicians who were also great friends were brought together for a public performance." Does anyone know the cover of it?  |
