Of all the stories told about this legendary musician, I like this best.

The Polish harpsichordist Wanda Landowska (1879-1959) was hugely influential in modern harpsichord playing and in the instrument's twentieth-century revival. She also held strong views on the way Bach should be interpreted. Confronted one day by a harpsichordist with opposing views she was soon locked in heated discussion. Finally, Landowska extricated herself from the no-win situation: "Well, my dear", she said, "you play Bach YOUR way, and I'll continue to play him HIS way."

前一陣子看了 Wuthering Heights (1939) 的 DVD，其中一幕有位女士在宴會彈古鍵琴娛賓。我當時覺得那位女士很面善，有點像 Landowska，她也彈得台型十足，一般臨記絕無此風範。影片完結後不見 credits 交代此人，為之悵然。

今天下午小休時在互聯網上問訊一番，喜聞那人果然是古鍵琴大師 Wanda Landowska (1879-1959)。

The excerpt she played in "Wuthering Heights" is not anything with which we usually associate her – Bach, Handel, or Couperin – as found in this 2-CD boxset. It's the final movement from Mozart's A major piano sonata, K.331 – Alla turca.Allegretto, something familiar even to those who seldem listen to classical music. Amazing.

But the Music, starring Bach, Handel, or Couperin and that seems to be.. just too close to me....
