| [#5528] Bach's flute sonatas 左： Bach: Flute Sonatas, BWV 1013, 1020, 1030, 1031, 1032, 1033, 1034, 1035 / Flute Sonata, BWV 1033 (solo flute) Janet See (baroque flute) / Davitt Moroney (harpsichord) / Mary Springfels (viola da gamba) [1990] harmonia mundi (Classical Express) HCX 3957024/25: DDD (2 CDs) 右： Bach: Flute Sonatas, BWV 1030-1035 / A minor Partita, BWV 1013 (solo flute) Stephen Preston (baroque flute) / Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord) / Jord Savall (viola de gamba) [1975] CRD 33145: ADD (2 CDs) 左：好聽，好好聲。 右：好聽好聽，不過錄音真係好吾夠大聲。 兩位 flautists 都是用 baroque flute，Janet See 用一管木製的transverse flute，溫厚而悠揚，她吹奏得很有生氣，極富有表達力，時時透出意大利的風味，加上錄音很貼近，整體上很討好，作試音碟也很不錯。Janet See 另有一款 Vivaldi 的 flute concertos，如魚得水之製也。 Stephen Preston 用一管 authentic 的 one-key flute，音量小，但非常耐聽，Preston 奏來意味婉約低迴，別有一番儒雅的韻致。Preston和合奏者 Trevor Pinnock 日後名氣都很大，另一位合奏者 Savall 亦非泛泛之輩，他是蘇黎世大學的教授，專教 viola da gamba。 總括而言，兩套 CD都屬雋永的妙品，是 Bach for book lovers 的上選，Pinnock 的一款，可以標舉為 Bach for book lovers in a library。  |

| [#5534] Concert Guide Introducing this altogether valuable book, which has been with me since 1978. My third book on classical music in English. First published in 1951 in Munich as "Knaurs Konzertführer". First published in Great Britain in 1963 by Thames and Hudson. This Sphere Books paperback edition published 1973. This is the first two paragraphs of the Foreword: "I have been asked by my colleague of long standing, Gerhart von Westerman, to write a few introductory words to his Concert Guide. "I am happy to comply with his request. Dr von Westerman has been my righthand man for years as director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and has always introduced the broadcasts of the Philharmonic concerts ..." Make a guess who wrote this Foreword for the book. Karajan? No. It's by someone more important than him: Wilhelm Furtwängler. Like many of you here at R33, I love classical music, but without possessing expert knowledge of the subject. I find this book most enlightening, mainly because of its coverage and above all of its design. It is intended for a readership who have little or no musical training but want to know more about the music they hear. You don't have to worry about the English translation. It’s done by the British composer Cornelius Cardew, who contributes a chapter on contemporary music.  |
