[#5585] Sibelius - Berglund + Helsinki A very good edition, lym 兄. Berglund + Bournemouth Sym Orch performed in HK City Hall about a quarter of a century ago. I was there, and that began my romance with Sibelius.

[#5586] Sheltering Sky Hi doctorjohn, Not that you'll ever want to read "The Sheltering Sky" in Chinese translation, but this is for your information: 《情陷撒哈拉》(原著 1949 年出版) Paul Bowles (1910-1999) 著 孟雅琳譯 重慶出版社,2006年4月出版。

[#5587] Sheltering Sky Hello trollope: After JC's thread, the shetering sky seems like a calm place. :-) Maybe the classical thread is a calm place? Paul Bowles was an interesting person. A gay fellow! A composer too!

[#5589] Stokowski Stereo Collection on RCA Hello trollope and friends, Have you got these 14 CDs in addition to the 2 Decca sets? It's nowhere to seen in HK now and there are very tempting pieces like Beethoven Eroica, Mahler 2, Brahms 4, Dvorak 9, excerpts from the Ring ...! Some of these are on other series perhaps?

[#5593] Franck Violin Sonata Philips Grumiaux/Sebok EMI Perlman/Argerich Decca Kyung-Wha Chung/Radu Lupu Listen to Franck Violin Sonata on the above three CD. I rate the recently acquired Decca over my previously preferred Philips. Chung/Lupu's canon/dialogue of the last movement is sweet and beautiful. It echo the notes in EMI booklet - 'The melody in canon which introduces the finale is one of the most beautiful and memorable tunes Franck ever wrote.'. One compliant, Chung plays those few 'strong' notes (in the last movement at 2min 24 sec) a bit short. About Prelman/Argerich, their playing in the 2nd movement is too violent, they seem 鬥法. Argerich plays a few wrong notes in the last movement; and there are lots of rubato where I perfer a steady tempo. The Beethoven Kreutzer in EMI reminds me the highly rated Perlman-Ashkenazy couple. Hope I can also listen to their playing of Franck later on. ![]()

[#5596] Stokowski wal : Hi.... I have not come across with the one you mentioned. Really shameful.... I have not yet listened to that LP yet despite that I have got it for quite sometime now.... (same to some other LPs as well) Your message should prompt me to listen to that Stokowski.... :-)

[#5597] Franck Violin Sonata Listen to one more Franck Violin Sonata - Midori/Robert McDonald From the (Midori) CD booklet, 'His experience as a church organist and his mastery of counterpoint are evident in the canon that launches the last movement, in which the violin mimics the expressive piano melody, note for note.' is a good description on the Chung/Lupu pair. I still think Chung/Lupu is a better choice. Coupled in this Midori CD is the Elgar Violin Sonata which is the only recording I've got. Her playing is breathtaking, at least in the opening of the first movement. ![]()
