| [#547] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I attended the concert of all Wagner program by HKPO and Edo de Waarts. The first thing I noticed was that concert by HKPO was more and more popular, the attendance was almost 70-80% now compared with 50-60% in the past, the hard work of our conductor and management team really pay off. The program started with orchestral version of the `Mastersingers of Nuremberg', I always found Wagner's opera too long, this orchestral version sound more or less like `Carmen Suite', the most beautiful moment in the opera were presented in a short and concise way. The playing of HKPO maintained its high standard, to my surprise, the brass section, which was HKPO's traditional weakness, performed brilliantly. The strings lack the sheen of the best orchestral in the world but sound sweet anyway. Edo de Warrts's conducting was expansive; leading HKPO played this gorgeous music in a grand and bold manner. The famous `Valkyries Ride of the Valkyries' was thrilling and exciting, but the highlight of the day was definitely the last program: `The Twilight of the Gods Funeral March and Immolation scene’. Elizabeth Connell processed all the quality Wagner required, her silvery tone penetrated the thick wall of string and brass created by HKPO under their conductor and the heroic nature of her role was presented most vividly. It was therefore not surprising that the audience broke into ovation after the music stopped. Another good news was that HKPO is going to presented Wagner complete `Der Ring Des Nibelungen’ in 2008, I eagerly await their new project in the coming year. Finally I would like to express but deepest gratitude to Edo de Waarts and members of HKPO for providing us such interesting music and performance.  |

Edo de Wart played Schubert 8 and Beethoven 3. i was totally impressed. when i got home, i listened to Karajan's Beethoven 3 once again! |

Schubert's fifth symphony was lucky to have a few great intrepreter, Karl Bohm and Sir Thomas Beecham were notable example, Sir Colin Davis's view was similiar to Bohm, looking back to Beethoven and give this symphony weight and gravity, comparing with Beecham cheerful light approach was interesting enough.  |

Any cd recommendation on Wagner? The only thing I got on this guy are Wagner Overture/Solti/Chiago Phil and "Ride of the Valkyries" in a compilation classic disc. I love to listen to more music form composer similar to Wagner background. Any other rebel classic composer like Wagner that you can recommend me? TKS. |

( classical mus lym, jeffr33 I am afraid my position are the same as yours, a four hour average opera is really too long, so my understanding on Wagner was mainly based on excepts, highlight and overtures. To have a sample of what Wagner sounded like, you can buy his overtures, Wagner's music were base on `motive', that is when someone appears or when something happened, the `motive tune' that represented the person will ring. And his overtures were very well written music, Klemperer and Szell were two master in performing Wagner's overture.  |
