Good morning, gs & ALL,

This is from one of the seven (1952, 56, 58, 58, 58, 68, 69) commercially released recordings of Mussorgsky's "Pictures" played by Sviatoslav Richter. The recording location and date: Moscow, 8 August 1958.

Gs, the edition of this particular recording you bought from HK Records is a recent re-issue of Melodiya 10 00515, first released on CD in 1994. Eurodisc, JVC, and Urania have previously released the same recoding on CD, with or without license from Melodiya. ABC from China has also released it in a 2-CD boxset, obviously a pirated edition (see photo).

As this is a 1958 Richter's "Pictures", comparison is invited between this and the celebrated 1958 recording at Sofia (Philips). Richter played very fast, too fast at Sofia in February in that year. The effect is certainly breath-taking. It's justly renowned for its wind, fire, and sheer energy. But a few months late in Moscow, Richter played most of the "Pictures" much slower, and so we are allowed to see or sense how Richter felt about the texture. I find that there is a lot more emotional logic behind "The Old Castle" and "The Hut on Chicken's Legs", to take two examples. In terms of sound quality, now honestly, the Sofia, albeit famous, is widely held as quite terrible. This Melodiya recording is at least quiet in the background, and taking into account that this is a 1958 mono Russian recording, it's really not bad at all. The attacks are firm enough, the upper registers are far from ideally focused; but we all know that with almost every recording of Richter, his magic will somehow be felt.

If you like this Melodiya "Pictures", I urge you to explore Richter's 1968 London recording (BBC Legends). The sound, still in mono I am afraid, comes out even more vividly (in 20-bit remastering); and this guided tour from one of the most thoughtful of pianists is an intimate and soul-enhancing experience. I think this piece of musical monument gives us the just the right distance to view the "Pictures" -- sometimes with great art, you feel a sort of impulse to step backward, as you do to get a view of a great façade.

Yesterday at the anniversary yumcha of JC's thread I was very glad to have won this Harmonia Mundi Nozze de Figaro set, courtesy of R33 member Avanti. But it was after I listened to Act I this morning that I began to relize its greatness.

I looked it up and agreed with EVERYTHING Amazon.com had tp say about it.It's amazing I had the same feelings when listening:

René Jacobs has done it again. Following on the heels of his superb Cosi fan tutte, he now offers a Nozze di Figaro which is alive and vibrant; it seems to be happening in real time. The singing/acting is stunning, with Simon Keenlyside's Count the best on CD (a dangerous man just in control of his anger), Veronique Gens' Countess girlish and womanly in equal measure, the Cherubino of Angelika Kirchschlager extraordinarily well sung and properly boyish, Patrizia Ciofi's Susanna witty and wise and Lorenzo Regazzo's Figaro slightly darker than others, but all the more interesting for it. Wow, and what great sound! You hear the piquant orchestra, the slightly muffled fortepiano (as it should be), all the inflections of the singers in their recitatives. Just super. It made my morning.

Thanks for your encouraging words.

I have not listened to Jacobs's "Figaro", but a couple of weeks ago I borrowed his "Così fan tutte" from a library and loved in instantly. The 3-CD set comes with an extra CD-ROM, with a lot of useful data AND a bilingual libretto that turns its pages while the complete opera is played on the computer. Isn't that great for an opera fan?

I think all of Jacobs' HM Mozart's are in the library. And nobody much fights with you for the multi-disc operas there, as it's a BIG chore to gather them all. I hear Cosi is just as good, if not even better.

The Figaro is Grammophone Record of the Year 2004. No CD-rom though (at least mine doesn;t have it)?

Talking about CDs from harmonia mundi, this is my most recent purchase.

Plenty to enjoy here in this Mozart clarinet quintet + trio CD (recorded 1983). Top-drawer recording: wonderfully vivid and pleasing. Well-documented booklet. A bit expensive though ($115).

The "Kegelstatt" Trio for clarinet, viola and piano (nicknamed Skittle Alley Trio) is less well-known than the quintet. But it's a work much loved by Mozart himself (who played the viola in its first performance) and Brahms. It's a captivating piece, at times relaxed, and at times melancholy. The other version of this work that I have listened to is the 1969 recording by Stephen Bishop Kovacevich (piano), Jack Brymer (clarinet), and Patrick Ireland (viola), re-issued in Volume 14 of Philips's "The Best of the Complete Mozart Edition" (1995). The recording is good for its age, with plenty of body. But the harmonia mundi CD makes out a stronger case, with every instrument sounds in ideal shape.

As for the Clarinet Quintet, my top preference reminds unchanged for years: a 1979 recording with these distinguished players from the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields' Chamber Ensemble: Antony Pay (clarinet), Iona Brown (violin), Malcolm Latchem (violin), Stephen Shingles (viola), and Denis Vigay (cello). My CD is from Philips's "Musica da Camera" 422 833-2, released in 1989. Portal is a stylish clarinetist, but the sound that Pay produces is simply sublime.

Mozarts' early Quartets (the only one i got)
Their perforamce is very natural but not colorful
Feeling of warmth and hormonic.
