[#565] Western Electric amps and 西電 My brother-in-law has a pair of WE KS-16608, tubes used are WE422A and KT66, the sound is more than good, but there is frequent noise and buzz coming out from these amps due to its flimsy 60hz power trans and a less flexible output trans. The amps were taken to Mr Wu for medication to cure the noise problem, finally Mr Wu took the liberty to replace the power trans with the WE359A(clone) and the OPT with WE171C(clone), and push up the HV to 400V so that the amp can accomodate 6L6GC, KT66 and WE350B tubes. Listening test was established yesterday with WE106A preamp and JBL+Jensen RP302, tubes used are WE350B, several rectifier tubes were used including GEC U52, CV717 and Mullard 5U4GI don't want to describe in details how it sound, but I can assure you that its much better than the original WE124, better than MR Wu's WE86(except the 86 is more transparant due to the triode tubes), and to a certain extent, it can challenge my Kondo Gakuoh in overall musicality. Most important of all, it only cost a little bit over $20K including the WE350B tubes, so its a real steal especially for those who have a pair of the KS16608 in the house.Check this out in Mr Wu's workshop regardless if you have doubt on what I've said or just for curiosity.

[#567] Western Electric amps and 西電 After months of struggle with the WE44A, I can now able to resolve the gain problem of the preamp. The trick is simple, just cconct a 1/2 watt 100K AB between the output of the interstage trans and the 205D grid and change the grid resistor to 50K. Other 44A users may need to experience the value of the 100K cos each of your system has a different sensitivity,so do try other values if you wish to push your 44A to a higher level. This change is especially beneficial if you are using the T-330 vol pot.

[#568] Western Electric amps and 西電 Peter, Not quite understand "just cconct a 1/2 watt 100K AB between the output of the interstage trans and the 205D grid and change the grid resistor to 50K"???? There is no interstage tranny on 44A. One input transf before 102D and one output after 205D. Can you draw? Thanks

[#569] Western Electric amps and 西電 老吳 hing, there are 6 leads to the 102D trans. lead #1 -> 102D plate lead #2 -> 205D grid & also lead #6 via a grid leak resistor 100K lead #3 -> input selector (i.e. signal input) lead #4 -> ground (short with lead #6) lead #5 -> 102D grid lead #6 -> ground (short with lead #4) for a input trans, leads #3-6 will do leads #1-2 form something like a parafeed interstage (to be confirmed by Wu sifu) so, it's effectively 2-in-1 trans Peter hing, thanks very much for the advice to reduce gain. if i understand correctly, it's basically a potential divider across 205D grid leak resistor to reduce signal from 102D. my 44A has similar arrangement after vol pot, which also reduce gain effectively. now that gain problem is not an issue. but since my vol pot has very limited number of steps, it's quite hard to set to the volume i like. i.e. one step down will be too soft and one step up will be too loud. do you have similar issue in your preamp? cheers

[#570] Western Electric amps and 西電 Mr Ng, The IPT 264C is a 2-in-1 trans, otherwise you need a cap to couple the 102D output to the 205D grid. FYI, I have tried various coupling caps ranging from .05uf to .1uf, the best sounding one is the build-in interstage.Mr Wu , please confirm bambino's drawings are correct, I'm not sure the markings of all 264C's are the same. bambino hing, You are right its a divider across the grid resistor,it has a similar function as the original fader. I believe this is the proper way to reduce gain, reduce gain before or after the vol pot cannot reduce the 'tense' character.Mr Wu said many times, the 102D has too much gain, eventhough the 264C is wired the other way round to reduce gain from input source, the gain of the 102D is still on the high side, the divider here is to further reduce gain before the signal goes into the delicate 205D.Please give it a try and share your findings.Daven T-330 may well resolve your pot problem.

[#571] Western Electric amps and 西電 Hi Pater, My 264C is not a 2-in-1 trans, I don't have an interstage, that's why I don't understand you and bambino hing description. I need to talk to Mr Wu, he is DA-SA-CHIUE.

[#574] Western Electric amps and 西電 Mr Ng, You should talk to Mr Wu, cos you have missed a lot of fun and chance for sound advancement. bambino hing, upon longer time listening, I find the value of the grid leak resistor has to be close to 100K, my 50K set up has a quicker highend roll-off. I'll try 150K-75K arrangement to replace the 100K-50K dividing network and report back later.Gordan, do you have these WE38 resistors in hand, they sound so much better than the Allen Bradley which is blur in character.
