[#5842] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Sifu r, I think Tim must be uneasy with the initial 'overshoot' voltages of these DH rectifiers. They usually heated up much faster than the KT66/EL34 so there's a short while the plate voltage of the KT66/EL34 will go up to >500V until they heated up. I don't know how harmful this short overshoot voltage is but after reaching steady state, the tube current is even lower. With GZ34 the cathode voltages are 27V in Yuen's Stereo 50 and with U52, they're all at 24V. After using U52, there no way of returning to GZ34. The difference is like a 6L6GC and a GEC KT66!

[#5843] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Yeung hing, Let me share my observation from LEAK TL/12.1. Even with GZ32, the B+ voltage also shoots up to >500V at start of the amp and then B+ drop slowly as KT66s heat up and conduct the right amount current through them to about 470V. Though KT66 has VaMax = 500V (tetrode) or 400V (triode), it should be able to withstand much higher voltage at a short period of time as at the start of the amp.

The difference is like a 6L6GC and a GEC KT66! --------------------------------------------- My worry is about the life of the power transformer instead of the KT66s. U52 consumes much more current than GZ34 (1.9A) and in the long run (a real case), U52/5U4 (3A!!!) can shorten the life of the PST. |

[#5846] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Sifu r, I care more about the sound than the tubes so I have DH rectifiers in all my amps nowadays. I heard EL34 can stand 800V for a short while! BTW, I discussed with drking in another thread when you use DH rectifiers the coupling caps are also exposed to a higher voltage during startup when the previous stage tubes are cold and not conducting. The voltage will finally lower to the normal rated plate voltage.

[#5847] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Sifu r, No No. Check this data sheet http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/sheets/126/u/U52.pdf U52 heater only consumes 2.25A The tube rectifier chart in timtube's forum also specifies 2.25A so it should be OK ga

[#5849] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Thanks tim, "TL10 has the same input sensitivity as TL12+ and ST20 at 125mV" Does it mean it only require 125mv from the pre amp to achieve a full swing? My other questions are, how the amp react when the output from pre-amp > 125mv? How one can determine the attanuation required in the AMP? I am looking for advice on the right resistor or resistor network to put on the pre amp input adaptor. Currently, I have no resistor in the adptor and I cannot turn the pre amp to position beyond 7:30 position. Otherwise, it would be too loud.

[#5850] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user U52 is NOT 100% a 5U4 as it only takes 2.25V filament current. And what Dr King suggested is right. It is best to build a stand-by switch to delay the application of B+ before the plate heat up. That is what is done in Alan's F2a11 Williamson. BTW, has the resistor bridge be added to the Leak ST50? If not, it may indeed be not as hard sounding with the reduced B+ by the U52 compare to GZ34. What proper input level, most Mullard 5-20 circuit sound too slow with U52/5U4 instead of GZ34 compare to the result you got.

[#5851] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user "Does it mean it only require 125mv from the pre amp to achieve a full swing? " Yes. And CD source gives over 2V. "My other questions are, how the amp react when the output from pre-amp > 125mv?" It will sound bad and distorted. And you may not turn the volume pass 7:30 as you mentioned. I suggest you try the same resistor network Sifu R and Sifu Gingers use in their Leak.

[#5852] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user IMO, Leak amps never need a pre amp. You see those leak pre are cheap in the street. With a pre amp, most leak amp sound quite 'course'. this is exception on 3/5A, with lower sensitivity.

[#5854] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user "Leak amps never need a pre amp" Eric, what can I do then? If I have multiple device and no volumn control in all device? Use passive?

[#5855] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Try a passive-pre, why not. some pre-amp add detail and sonic colouration, but Leak itself sounds very good.

[#5857] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6533167813 I can only afford a new toy like this. You are bidding on vintage AM radio of a car. The car measures 10" long and 3 1/4" high at the back of car. It says Waco on bottom of car and the license plate on front and back has 1934. The car has a brass tone to it and is tin or metal, the fenders are hard plastic. The wheels are rubber, and the spare tire on the passenger side is the on and off button, and the drivers side is where you change the channels. It takes a 9V battery. The interior is red plastic, this car radio is in near mint condition, also the bottom is plastic.

[#5860] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak user Ginger, I am very very satisfied with the Fisher 400CX-2 ! In my own view, it is very sweet and transparent, especially when I played Eva Cassidy. I am so surprised how heavenly her sound could be with the Fisher. Having A/B compared Fisher with Scott 130 on my Quad II, Fisher got more "taste" and transparency. The difference is most significant when playing female vocal. I have lent my Fisher SA-100 to my friend, so have no chance to try the Fisher combo yet. Just my two cents. A very happy man Michael
