| [#5981] Double bass CD Among the popular pieces of classical music, it's Schubert's Trout Quintet that offers the most generous serving of double bass. And, perhaps a bit lesser known to some of you, Zelenka's Trio Sonata Nos. 1 and 3 are augmented by a double bass. This pair of DG Archiv Produktion double CD (423 937-2, recorded 1972) has been a source of constant joy for me for the past fifteen years, and I cannot quite imagine such joy elsewhere. Heniz Holliger (who plays the oboe here) writes in the CD booklet, "Here the conventions of the Baroque trio sonata are stretched to the limit both in terms of the physical demands made on the players and of the capabilities of the instruments. All this gives the music and inner tension, a life very much of its own, which differentiates it strongly from the everyday pleasantries of music by minor Baroque composers and also, quite fundamentally, from the static uniformity and monumentality of Bach's art."  |

Have you had the chance to compare this Italian Concerto with others also by Richter?＜＜ I referring to your post dated Aug-26 22:38. Eventually I listened to Richter's Italian Concerto during last Sat, the performance is very good, very musical. This is my only one Richter's Italian Concerto, so I can't make any comparison, but I did a comparison between this and the one by Wanda Landowska (Naxos, 8.110313, recorded in 1936-Jun). Both are outstanding performance, personally I prefer to listen to piano than harpsichord, in terms of recording, of course 1991 is much better than 1939. |
